Second war nickel this week, though I only do small amounts

You're under-selling it. You found a 50-D and that is a small success? I have 4 spots left to fill in my book and that will be the hardest. Congrats on the find.

I have searched thousands of dollars in nickels
And have not found a 50D yet.


By the way, I would change your title of the post--- finding a 50D is a HUGE success!!

The 50D is the lowest minted year/mint mark of the Jefferson series. 2,630,030 minted which is a very low number.

Higher grades are not worth as much as you would expect as the low mintage was known to the public beforehand. That resulted in many collectors hoarding them when they were released. That resulted in a lot of high grades available lowering the value.

The value depends on condition. Lower grades will still sell for $5-$10 while higher grades can be over $100 (s)

I had no idea. I had read they were harder to get, but did not realize that hard. I stand corrected and VERY happy to hear. Looks like I had a GREAT success! Thanks for all the info. I'm obviously new to the forum and love reading all posts. Have learned a TON in just two weeks of reading

I keep all pre-1960s, since they can fetch a premium, and may be worth more in the future.

I rechecked my 59 pile and it was in there. Though I think you are right now that I looked at it in better light.....
