Hey Joe, personally, I have never been able to tell by the edge of a Nick, I don't search them anymore though, but when I did some, I couldn't really tell. They, as you said, just take way too long to search because of that reason for me. HH, Maverick.

It would be impossible to edge-check nickels with any degree of accuracy.

Once you do it enough, it goes by quicker. I don't mind wasting the time on nickels because I find more and better coins that I'm looking for (especially silver ones).

To answer your question, no you can't edge search them with any certainty whatsoever. You would miss a lot of keepers (war nickels, key dates, proofs, buffalos, V nickels, etc.)

Sure would suck to miss that MS-65 Three-Legged Buffalo when edge checking for only war nickels.
