Here is a picture of a silver proof coin. Proof coins can be silver or clad, the clad will have the same kind of characteristics as this one just not the silver look. They are not always but usually highly mirrored surfaces, the raised areas are frosted looking, they are very well struck coins, with thick rims. Sorry for the odd color, this was taken inside.

All proof half dollars (since 1968) will have an "s" mintmark. The only non-proof ,"s" mintmark, half dollar to my knowledge is a business-strike 40% silver bicentennial.

Ok now I have a 1977-S Eisenhower dollar i have read that it is a proof.... not real pretty but is a 1977 -S so what do you think. It also looks like a mess-up strike on the S as well IMG_1630.jpg IMG_1631.jpg

wow thank you. I really got lucky, I was cruising my local banks for halves and asked if they had any ikes and they had two.
