So I opened an account with a local bank so I have more options to order- went to a different branch to pick up dimes, I did go there last week looking for halves but other than that never been there- any ways I asked for 1 or 2 boxes of dimes if they had it- the teller went to look and the teller next said there was a fee for business, I said ok but I was a new member at they weren't for a biz. He went in to accuse me of lying and that why would I need that many dimes if it wasn't for a biz- I told him I was collecting them trying to fill my book(not really, looking for silver) but he continued to argue with me- well when my teller came back she said she had one but if it was for a biz I'd have to pay the fee I told her it was personal and she said I'm sorry but only biz use that much coins- I just laughed and said ok no thanks and walked out- man I wish this branch had a coin machine so I could dump all my dimes- I still may use it to dump my halves at-

Mercury, I believe that if your case of attempting to make a loan payment with rolled coin had went to court, you would have likely lost. I think what happened was that the regional supervisor you spoke with correctly surmised that it would be much less of a hassle to just accept the halves than fight it. Even if they beat you in court, and I think they most likely would have, it would have cost them more in legal fees, time, and trouble than having to deal with your half dollars costs them. Had your payment amount been $100,000+ instead of $1000 or if you were attempting to pay with bags of unrolled cents, I believe your situation might have had a different outcome. The law concerning this is a bit vague. It would likely come down to a judge's ruling, and its very possible that 2 different judges would rule differently. But, I just don't believe that I can go purchase a $250,000 house, show up to my mortgage holders office a few days later with 25 million cents, and if they do not accept it as payment, then the house is mine free and clear. I'd lay 20-1 odds I couldn't win that battle in court. I remember reading an article somewhere online in the past several months about a guy attempting to pay some sort of disputed utility bill with a bunch of cents. They refused to accept them and it was upheld. While coins are indeed "legal tender for all debts public and private", individuals and businesses are free to specify which form(s) of legal tender they will or will not accept. For example, most convenience stores in my area will not accept any notes larger than $20. This article touches on the subject, and you can see how vague the law is worded and how a judge's ruling could go either way. snopes.com: Debt Payment in Pennies

First off, it was me, not Mercury.

I wouldn't have lost. When you have a true debt, any form of currency payment must be accepted. A convenience store not accepting large bills is not a debt, that would be a transaction. Paying pennies on a utility service bill is not a debt either, but it's close. With service bills, you're paying to keep your account in good standing for continued service. If you don't pay, they cut off your service. (Then if it goes to collections, you can pay however you want, but you've lost your service!)

Taxes and debts can be paid however you can with legal tender. I wouldn't try taxes though, because no matter what kind of government official you're confronting, they can make your life hell right back in return somehow. There are people on this very forum that do what you said about mortgage payments. If you showed up to pay off your mortgage with 25 million cents, somebody will make accommodations!

CRHing is a finesse game IMO. With more and more banks cutting costs, instituting fees, etc., its more of a finesse game than ever. Pretty much what we CRHers do is to go from bank to bank looking for handouts. We're essentially panhandlers. We try to get them to give us something for free that they had to pay for in most instances. Which type of panhandler would you be more likely to give to? The type that very kindly says something like, "Pardon me, but could you spare a little change to help me out? I'd really appreciate it." or the one who rudely says, "You have so much money, you must share some with me. I'm entitled to it." Just something to think about.

I think it's a little strong to say CRH'ers are panhandlers. I very seriously doubt anybody goes into a bank begging for a money or a handout or walking in with a bold lie on a sign about how they are some disabled veteran or looking for work, and pretty sure they understand that to get money from a bank you have to BUY it (or get lucky with reject trays). I have seen banks that order coins frequently in large quantities, some that rarely order and some that never order. One local credit union operates solely off of coins brought in by customers and don't even have a carrier for coins, but they still have a hometown feel and buy coin counting machines for their branches and staff extra to be able to do this. While BoA on the other hand as an example with its branches on almost every street corner probably discovered it is cheaper for them to just not buy coin machines for every branch or staffing and just have a blanket plan with Brinks or whoever, so they have to order coins from Brinks because they bypass the machines to save themselves money. Is it really a burden to banks to ask them if you can buy half dollars? I dump mine back into coinlok bags and they go back to Loomis, they don't have to sit around forever until the banks fill up a 500 or 1000 dollar bag. Most banks seem ecstatic that you want them and take them off their hands.

I understand the frustration with some of the attitudes of thinking banks OWE them anything, its laughable to me. Most banks don't care unless you are sitting on millions then they may show some care. I agree you will get much further in CRH if you are just nice and courteous to tellers and especially vault managers. Compare yourself to a One armed bandit, pirate, troll, panhandler, begger, etc... but that is not how i view my CRH'ing habits. I am merely an enthusiast who enjoys coins, it relaxes me to do it since when i am CRH'ing i think of nothing else in my busy life, and who would think it but buying money to look through and sometimes actually gaining (silver) saves me money because i don't spend my time at the mall, casino, etc....

Just curious TH, what was howerd's previous user name?

Kevinbomb was one of 4 he was using, Kevin and Steven Hawkins were same person when i caught him he said it was his 16 year old son. I did search for his username and found it on several on net websites including a golf site where he explained he was 17 years old and came from same city and ip used here so he got a 180 day timeout for using dual accounts at same time and lying about it when caught.

He snuck in again under new 3rd name and flew under radar till he signed up as Howard, while searching Howard's IP it led to the 4th name and all 4 were linked together.

All 4 banned for good...

It had appeared that DACC was the same guy as another user name that was not mentioned here. They showed the same patterns in writing about certain things.

I thought Kevin and Stephen were the same person. I thought Em was too, but this cleared up some things I was interested in.
