Sleepy's Most Wanted (Roosevelt Dimes)

After having searched through $7,110 worth of dimes, I figured I'd get a Whitman Coin book (1946-1964 Dimes). I'm going to make it my goal to fill it by the end of the year! To the right is my "Most Wanted" List to help keep track of my progress. I want all of my finds to be from CRHing, so I won't be purchasing any of them. Here goes nothing! :headbang: 1)1955

Pick up banks have abbreviated hours right now and dump bank is limiting number of customers in lobby. Had to adjust a little, but still very doable. All banks said they were good with my dime hunting as usual. Really abused my travel sanitizer bottle today just to be sure. First time finding a clad proof ender today. Kinda cool I guess. 14 FDRs and a Merc today as well. Can't tell if there was ever a mint mark on it or not. That's it...I'm getting a microscope!

All pickup banks are still good with me coming in. One told me to call ahead next week. Two told me to use the drive-thru since they already know their lobbies will be closed next week. I need my dump bank to keep the lobby open though in order to keep operations running. They are still limiting the number of people in the lobby. I can live with standing out in the rain for a few minutes if it means access to the coin counter. I'm quite impressed with how much the tellers want to keep supporting me.

BREAKING NEWS: We have just been notified that we are moving to our next assignment as originally scheduled! Back to the early April departure...:tongue7:

Well, it happened...and without advanced notice...my dump bank closed its lobby and refused access to the coin counter. Obviously the writing was on the wall, but I had hoped my dump bank would have given their customers a day or two advanced notice like so many of my pickup banks had. Now, I'm holding 9+ boxes of dimes and moving within the next couple of weeks. I don't know if my next duty station will have any free coin counters. My next thought went to the tens of boxes I have lined up for next week. I told each one of these vault managers I would not leave them with a vault full of unwanted dimes when I set up each arrangement. I called my Tuesday bank that orders me six boxes. They informed me that they were closing their branch until further notice. Tuesday cleared! :headbang: Wednesday bank that orders me four boxes called me and told me they would not be able to order boxes till further notice. Wednesday cleared! :headbang: Thursday is down to two banks that want me to pick up at the drive thru. Same with Friday. I think I'll have to call up these branches and let them know this will be the last week. It's looking like I'll have to move with 13+ boxes. I don't think the bank lobbies will be reopened in the next couple weeks, but hey, you never know.

I DID find a great coin though. I looked at the mint mark and saw that big beautiful 'S'. I turned it over to my wife and played the guessing game. I never made it to the '54S, but man, the 1950S is a tough coin to find. Would have been great to knock out a Most Wanted FDR here at the end.

Well, several pickup banks have given me the green light to continue the hunt through the Great Corona Pandemic of 2020, but it's really a moot point with no dump bank. :unhappysmiley: We're now on the hook for 3 boxes next week before we can officially shut down operations for a while. We'll see how we finish out.

Tell me about it! I got asked today if I wanted to go back to the 11 May departure date or if I wanted to press forward. At this point, we're just going to press...I don't wanna jack my family around any more with all the back and forth moving dates.

So, done with the dawn treatment on the '63 Silver Proof. Shined up alright, but it's definitely seen some time in circulation! Didn't use any brushes or anything...just an RX bottle, some dawn, and some hot water for a few days - just like Dozer said.

Big day today...This morning, I received my Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering for my work over the past year and a half. Quite the accomplishment for me since I never wanted to go to college to begin with! :laughing7: This afternoon, I concluded my CRHing in the area by picking up my final box. Glad to see it wasn't a skunk.

Well, the Ohio hunt is over. I am at my next duty station, living out of a suitcase with my now 3 month pregnant wife and our 1.5 year old daughter. Might be a few months before we can get into a house with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Had a great time hunting Ohio...so much history there! I will miss my tellers and vault managers. Many of them were sad to see me go, but at the same time I'm sure a few of them were glad to be done with all the dimes! :laughing7: I picked the hunt back up on 24 Jun 2019 after we took a family 17-road trip that included a trip to the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The tour was pretty standard, but it really got me thinking about CRHing again. I had previously hunted for 11 months in 2013 and found 39 of 48 coins in the 1946-64 set. I decided to once again try to complete my FDR set. Just three days into the Ohio hunt, I was able to find FDR #40: the 1948S! I needed that one. I have often wondered if I had not found that Most Wanted coin as early on as I did, would I have been able to mentally withstand the 90-day drought that would follow without quitting. If I had to be honest with myself, I think I would have cracked. Finding that coin fueled what would turn out to be a very aggressive 9-month hunt. From Jun 2019-Mar 2020, I was able to find seven of the remaining nine Most Wanted Dimes, with only the '55D and the '54S escaping my grasp. I was able to grow my merc collection from 17 to 29 unique dates: 16S, 18, 23, 27, 28, 30, 35, 36PD, 37PD, 38, 39D, 40PS, 41PD, 42PDS-45PDS. Took my haircut dime collection from 0 to 3: 1901, 1904, 1914. I was very much looking forward to attempting my "10K in a Week Challenge", but with all the banks closing down, I didn't really have much of an option. The week I had targeted ended up seeing a dime volume of $750! Can't predict global pandemics! I ended up having to take 10.5 boxes with me when we moved. The hunt will be paused for a few months until we find a house...and even after that, I won't be able to conduct the operation I had going in Ohio. Heck, I don't even know if my new location has coin counters! We'll see what happens. I leave you with a quote from myself as stated on 12 Aug 2019.

HH,

:sleepy2:

I'm driven by the results that GMan00001 and I (along with a few others) developed in a thread back in 2013 where we concluded that someone would need to find on average 918 silver FDRs to collect the entire 1946-64 set. As of today, I am currently at 441, so I've got some work to do. I'm further motivated by the fact that I just received another assignment with a report date of April 2020! The assignment I'm in right now is very favorable to me being available during banking hours. My next assignment (like my last one) will likely not be. I'd like to find as much as I can between now and April, but I'm keenly aware of the fact that despite my best efforts, I will likely leave this place in a similar spot to GMan - with a couple FDRs yet to find. :sad11:

...I'm now at 923 FDRs found All-Time.

No matter when or where your next search opportunity arises, we'll be waiting to cheer you on to completion.

2013 was part 1, 2019-2020 the sequel and I'm sure you got a trilogy in ya. A trio of dime novels, if you will. :laughing7:

Best of luck to you and your family Sleepy! Be safe. :hello:

THE MINT STRIKES BACK...

When we last left off, Sleepy had been hit by a fierce one-two punch that included a global pandemic followed by a permanent change-of-station. No longer is the local banking system rich with high volume opportunities. Gone are the days when $5310 in dime volume for a week was the record low. This new location is ripe with CRHers and near extinct on free-to-member coin counters; however, we're still missing the '54S and the '55D, so the hunt must go on!

Based on the lack of hunting opportunities in my current area, I think I'm going to update on a monthly basis unless I have some kind of breakthrough.

Pretty noteworthy month. Let's get it out of the way now - I actually found something this month. :laughing7: Biggest find was probably the 1924 Merc (pics below). It becomes my 30th unique Merc of the 77 coin set. Always good to find a merc, but always better to fill a hole! Then I celebrated my 1000th silver dime :occasion16: by going from 993 to 1,000 in a single roll (933 FDRs, 64 Mercs, 3 Barbers). A new personal record for me! It might be hard to believe considering how many dime rolls I've gone through, but my previous record was only three silver dimes in a single roll. The next week I was able to pull 4 dimes from a single roll from the same bank I got the 7-dime roll. I know, I know..."go buy them all!!", but it's not that easy. Super small bank with (from what I can tell) two tellers total on the payroll that claim they can't sell me that much due to the national coin shortage. I offered to trade them out new fed rolls, but they would still only do it for the same amount as a paper transaction. :icon_scratch: It's all about building relationships at this point. On a separate note, I opened another two accounts to help with the CWR supply. Going to start getting more CWRs as they seem to be much more productive in my current location. Also, I only have access to a single coin machine unless I travel to another town 40 minutes away. (spoiler alert - [probably] not going to happen.) Yeah, the '24 was the top dog this month, but I was really excited to see that '51S Category 1 dime to end the month, too. Almost makes you think the '54S or the '55D is right around the corner...or maybe they're just sitting at that small bank!

Not bad numbers considering I was out of town a majority of the month. Excited to see some more mercury dimes as well as another Category I FDR. On 11 March, I found seven of those eight dimes listed in a single roll, similar to last month; everything but the '49D. Considering this 7-dime roll came with two MERCs, I'm now counting it as my best roll all-time. Nothing really noteworthy to take pics of this round. The hunt for the final two Most Wanted Dimes continues...

The biggest event for April had nothing to do with a find. I past the $300K threshold for all-time dime volume. During that time period, I was able to pull 950 FDRs, 67 Mercs, and 3 Barbers. The next $100K started off nicely with the 29th's six FDRs. An April honorable mention: New high volume for a single month in my new area. Other than that, pretty standard month.
