Coin Roll Hunting, Poker, and Marathon Running

After Coin Town's recent post about stacking and selling copper pennies and all the discussion about poker on his thread, I decided to start a new one, rather than hijacking his post.

I get the impression that there are a lot of us on here: CRHers who enjoy poker. It could be because they both have a lot in common:

-Both require a large bankroll to be successful
-Both require a lot of patience - you gotta be a grinder
-While a lot of it is hard work and persistence, there is definitely some luck involved
-You often invest a lot of time and work hard and see little gain
-The big scores/cashes outweigh the skunks/bad beats
-You get the same thrill in poker when you scoop a big pot that you get when you open a solid roll of silver halves coin roll hunting
-Both are addicting (LITERALLY) and it's important to keep a balance in life and not get carried away

Obviously, they are different in some ways, too. And to appease those who don't like gambling, I will admit:

-CRHing has very little down-side risk vs poker (which can get you into trouble if you either don't manage your bankroll, have a string of bad luck, or just aren't as good a player as you think you are)
-CRHing is legal in all 50 states
-CRHing is a great hobby for people of all ages and walks of life

I too, am one of those out there that actually makes $ at poker. I only play tournaments. That is my niche, and it also limits the amount of money I can lose in a session. I have a log with every tournament I have ever entered, and I have made the money in 15/32 live tournaments I have entered - almost 47% of them! (That's pretty good considering that usually only the top 10-15% of the players in each tournament cash out.) To me, it's all about bankroll mgmt, and playing in good-structured tourneys (i.e., 30+ min levels with blinds that go up gradually - not doubling with each level), large player pools, low fee:prize pool ratios, big stacks, etc.) I don't play as much as I would like to (seeing as I live in Vegas!), but I recognize that it's just a hobby (like CRHing) that I need to keep in check and not let it take up too much of my time.

Being a betting man, I would venture to say there are a good number of runners on this site too - long distance or maybe even marathon runners. These people would have some of the same characteristics the CRHers and poker players have: they are persistent and hard-working. (And there's even the "runner's high" - a runner's version of a four of a kind or solid roll of silver!) I am a running man, myself. Have run since junior high - and have run two marathons (more like a brisk jog - I don't consider myself elite by any means). I think, at least with me, there is something about all three that is very much the same.

Count me in for the poker part!!! I played pro a couple years back, but playing low limits(1/2NL) wasnt enough to keep paying the weekly $500+ cost of living expenses. Big cities arent cheap to live in :P

I also used to play pretty big online, would play 4-5 tables of 1/2 NL back before all the "legal" mess.

You are right about the patience part... im full of that! Bankroll management is key for both as well.

Great post! You really nailed the similiarities between the two.

Those are great times! About 9 min mile avg for me (like I said - I'm not elite.) It's hard for me to put in the time to train to do it right. (Plus, running in Vegas sucks in the summer - still 90 degrees at 10:30 at night.) No excuses though - I still have Boston on my bucket list. It will happen one day.

I used to play 1/2 pretty frequent live and online but somehow managed to stop caring about playing for higher stakes one day. Now a friendly home game is all i am up for, like 50-100 buck buy in. Random how I stopped, my last real poker outing about 2 yrs ago netted me 4200 and another 500 in craps....quit while you are ahead i guess lol

I will be a marathon runner someday... hopefully soon. I trained for one about 5 years ago, but about a month before the race I hurt my leg and just never ran the race. I was trying to rush training a little faster than I should and tried to push through shin splints on one leg and ended up injuring my other leg...lesson learned. Been an "on again"/"off again" runner ever since. Longest race to date was a 10 mile run. Biggest challenge for me is finding the time to train with work, the kids, and everything else I want to do. And if I ever really get time to train and I can increase my speed enough to where I could finish in a reasonable time, I wouldn't mind trying one of those ultra-marathons either (50 miles+), but if that ever happens it won't be for a while.

I never actually played poker at a casino, only the free online stuff (Partypoker.com) and the occasional at home game. I usually did pretty well online at either the free "fun" tables online or in the free online tournaments. If I remember right I had like $10,000,000+ in fake money (most you can start with is $5,000). I played a bunch of the free single table tournaments and usually finished 1st, 2nd, or 3rd of 10. I only tried a couple of larger online tournaments which seemed more realistic based on betting patterns (can't remember how many players, but there were quite a few tables) and I think I made the final table in 1 out of my 2 tries at it, finishing 3rd. I might have been able to do better, but I was getting tired as it was after 3 AM and I had been playing for at least four hours to get to that point. Since it was free, I more or less I gave up and started pushing all in when I had nothing to end it quickly one way or the other. It's been a couple years now since I played online as I just seem to have lost the bug to do so.

I've played poker since I was like 4 on pogo.com, no joke. Then I started playing on fulltilt terrible mistake. They have like $450 of mine still...I'm glad pokerstars bought them though. I just play tournaments and 5NL-10NL on ACR and make about $5/hr. Like you said it's a hobby just like anything else. I used to play 25NL and make about $8/hr 4 tabling. And I agree with the tournament structure online I have to play 10min+ blind levels deep stacked, probably equivalent to an hour live. I can't stand turbos. I'm pretty pumped next spring break as I am taking a gambling (poker) trip to Canada! :D

Im training myself to run a marathon. Im 15 and can run a 10k-half marathon. Just pacing yourself is the most important

I'm not a runner but I do mountain bike. I am also a low stakes poker player. Mainly play at home with friends and then do a small tournament occasionally with a $100 buyin. Never have made much money at it and lost a $1000 or so on fulltilt. So, I decided to give it up as far as putting a serious bankroll at risk. It's a tough balance between family, biking, CRH, and poker playing. I also try to metal detect occaissionnally but my returns CRH are so much better than md, it's hard to do the detecting.

I do play poker as much as CRH and bill searching. I can see the similarities in some aspects...
