After Coin Town's recent post about stacking and selling copper pennies and all the discussion about poker on his thread, I decided to start a new one, rather than hijacking his post.
I get the impression that there are a lot of us on here: CRHers who enjoy poker. It could be because they both have a lot in common:
-Both require a large bankroll to be successful
-Both require a lot of patience - you gotta be a grinder
-While a lot of it is hard work and persistence, there is definitely some luck involved
-You often invest a lot of time and work hard and see little gain
-The big scores/cashes outweigh the skunks/bad beats
-You get the same thrill in poker when you scoop a big pot that you get when you open a solid roll of silver halves coin roll hunting
-Both are addicting (LITERALLY) and it's important to keep a balance in life and not get carried away
Obviously, they are different in some ways, too. And to appease those who don't like gambling, I will admit:
-CRHing has very little down-side risk vs poker (which can get you into trouble if you either don't manage your bankroll, have a string of bad luck, or just aren't as good a player as you think you are)
-CRHing is legal in all 50 states
-CRHing is a great hobby for people of all ages and walks of life
I too, am one of those out there that actually makes $ at poker. I only play tournaments. That is my niche, and it also limits the amount of money I can lose in a session. I have a log with every tournament I have ever entered, and I have made the money in 15/32 live tournaments I have entered - almost 47% of them! (That's pretty good considering that usually only the top 10-15% of the players in each tournament cash out.) To me, it's all about bankroll mgmt, and playing in good-structured tourneys (i.e., 30+ min levels with blinds that go up gradually - not doubling with each level), large player pools, low feerize pool ratios, big stacks, etc.) I don't play as much as I would like to (seeing as I live in Vegas!), but I recognize that it's just a hobby (like CRHing) that I need to keep in check and not let it take up too much of my time.
Being a betting man, I would venture to say there are a good number of runners on this site too - long distance or maybe even marathon runners. These people would have some of the same characteristics the CRHers and poker players have: they are persistent and hard-working. (And there's even the "runner's high" - a runner's version of a four of a kind or solid roll of silver!) I am a running man, myself. Have run since junior high - and have run two marathons (more like a brisk jog - I don't consider myself elite by any means). I think, at least with me, there is something about all three that is very much the same.
