Alright you coin junkies, I have a trick for you.
I was very thristy today at lunch and needed my Dew fix. I stopped by a Food Lion with the Pepsi machine out front and put in my 1 dollar and 1 quarter, but the machine kept spitting my quarter back. I thought it was the same quarter and wasn't paying attention until my new state quarter came back as a 65 quarter... Hmm, I pondered. I wonder how long this will go on, so I kept putting my quarter in. Eventually a '47 came out and I said, heck with it! Pocketed my treasure, pushed the button and out popped my Dew. It appears someone put a quarter in the machine and it was just rejecting the overpayment.
So, get yourself a pocket full of quarters and pay your local 20 oz Pepsi machine a visit. Quite possible you might get some silver out of it. ;D

Yeah, I've heard of people doing this before.... just keep sticking quarters in until you get a silver one to pop out of the reject tray. Of course this only works if there is a silver quarter to be had in the machine.

Congrats on your great find for the day!

Yeah, I use do do that about fifteen years ago or so, but put a quarter in a change machine and it gave you five nickels. I would look for pre-60s that way.

What you're talking about also works if you find some high priced vending machine, where items cost upwards of two dollars. You pop in as many quarters as it will take, hit the coin return button, and you'll get all new (different) quarters.

You can try that for a while and see what you get. (your post prompted me to try it for a few minutes, and I did get a bicentennial quarter after about five tries).

We all are on this forum because of our love for coin roll hunting (CRHing), Immy and some others also practice casino coin hunting (CCHing) and you cryptodave can be credited for renewing the lost art of vending machine coin hunting (VMCHing).

Congrats on your find, for reminding me (us) of this lost art and good luck.

My boss' husband has a Pepsi and Coke machine at his auto garage. Every time he empties the change, she gives it to me to roll (I get to keep any old coins I find). I've rolled thousands of dollars in change for her and have NEVER found a silver coin... I have, however, found buffalo nickels and scores of pre 1960 Jeffersons. I really wonder if many vending machines reject silver the way that coinstars do. But if you can find machines with silver in them, I say go for it.

OK cryptodave, you got me reminiscing.

I had nine quarters in my desk drawer so I went to a vending area in my building. There was a sandwich vending machine that was priced such that it would take all nine of the quarters at one time.

After hitting the coin return three different times, I had another bicentennial and a low mintage 68D (actually lowest minted (non-proof) quarter since '63). "Played" the remaining seven quarters another ten or twelve times; but no more keepers.

I'm happy with the two I found, and thanks for reminding me about VMCHing.

I have never heard of this, but it's brilliant. Even if there is no silver, I could certainly fill some empty spots in my albums. Thanks for the trick!

Wish I had heard about this last week...
Had my oil changed and I waited an hour in the waiting room right next to a soda machine. That would have been a lot more entertaining then a people mag. from 2002...
Here's another thought, mark the first coin you put in so you know when you've been through them all.
