Today's "errand" run (02-21-2007)

I mentioned in the previous post (02-20-2007) about my son's appendectomy. Well today after he got home, I had to run to the store to pick up some things (pain medicine, etc.). Figured I might as well cash in the rejects from the previous day's half dollar boxes as well.

While cashing in my rejects, I found 2 Eisenhower dollars left in the self-serve counting machine (1974-D, 1977-D).

Ended stopping by a few other banks as well.

I now have a lot of coins to open over the next few days while I am at home:

Pennies:
Picked up 3 more boxes of pennies (Now I have 4 left to open).

Nickels:
Picked up 3 boxes of nickels. (all remain unopened)

Dimes:
Picked up 1 box of dimes which I opened when tonight
1 silver Roosevelt (1962) <--fills a hole in my book only 8 left to complete the book. (though most came from buying a small personal collection last year).
Scanned through 112 clear plastic rolls at the bank(s), bought 1 which produced a 1960-D Roosevelt.
One teller sold me the 1963-D Roosevelt that was in their tray as well.

Quarters:
Scanned through 45 clear plastic rolls at the bank(s), bought 2 rolls which produced:
1 silver quarter (1961-D) <--#2 on the year :D
1 Canadian quarter (2001-P) <-- I knew it was Canadian, but the tellers were asking too many questions, so I just said most of the time the ones I spot to buy are Canadian (and then showed them what I meant)..... ;D Opened the other roll later.

Halves:
Purchased 1 sealed box of halves plus 39 other rolls and $29 in loose half dollars.
The loose half dollars had:
2 - 40% Kennedy (1967, 1969-D)

The 39 additional rolls produced:
2 - 90% Kennedy (1964, 1964-D)
5 - 40% Kennedy (1967(5))
1 Proof Kennedy (1976-S)

The sealed box remains unopened until tomorrow (per my son's request). Though from a quick visual of the ends of the rolls there were 2 - 40% Kennedy and 1 - 90% Kennedy showing so I am optimistic.

Also picked up 2 - $1 Silver Certificates (1935F, 1957B)

By the way, while I was at the US Bank in Chanhassen. I asked to buy the bag of half dollars from the coin machine. They said someone had just tried to buy it from them recently and got rather upset when he couldn't. Sounded like it may have been someone on here since they were also looking for red seal $2 bills. If that is someone on here, FYI, I was told by the tellers that one of that bank's regular customers comes in and exchanges for all the silver halves in every bag and this bag had already been picked over. That and it was loaded with foreign coins so it the count would have been significantly short. At least the teller had 2 silver halves in her tray, so the stop was still worthwhile. ;D

I'll update later on any findings from the boxes listed above. Though the halves have me most intrigued.

Re: Today's "errand" run (02-21-2007)

Finally got around to opening the box of half dollars just before lunch.

My best box yet.

1 Franklin (1961-D)
6 - 90% Kennedy (1964(5), 1964-D)
12 - 40% Kennedy (1965, 1966(3), 1967(2), 1968-D(3), 1969-D(3))

I let my son pick out one for his collection....

Surprise, surprise he picked the Franklin (his second). :)

Will update later with the other stuff.

Re: Today's "errand" run (02-21-2007)

Just wondering what exactly you ask the tellers. You said you picked up 2- $1 silver certs and bought the silver coins out of the tellers trays. Do you just ask them if they have any old currency or what? Thanks.

Pretty much, for $5's, $10's, and up I just ask if they have any of the older small headed bills. This is the first time I have come across any old $1's. Though I do sometimes get 100-200 in $1's to look through when I cash in coins (trading coins for bills and trade the bills for coins at a different bank). The oldest $1 I have found this way is like 1985 and most aren't worth keeping, but I have found a few star notes (which I keep).

In this case, the bank I was at is in a neighborhood with lots of older folks so they see more than their share of old bills, coins, etc.

Basic rule:
If you don't ask they usually won't tell you about it. Even if they don't care about it.

Also, the worst answer you will get is "No sorry, don't have any." (which happen most of the time).

Re: Today's "errand" run (02-21-2007)

Thanks for the reply. I think I will start checking the local banks for paper currency from now on. I had never actually thought about neiborhoods with a higher percentage of older folks being better to hit but that makes all the sense in the world. I need to find a bank by a reitrement community! :)

Re: Today's "errand" run (02-21-2007)

Opened the last two boxes of pennies and the last box of nickels

Last box of nickels.. (about average totals, but dates could have been better)
1 War Nickel (194X-S) very beat up cannot read the date at all but the S on the back is clear.
25 other pre-1960 jeffersons (1940(2), 1941(3), 1941-S (Small S), 1946, 1946-D, 1947-D, 1952, 1952-D(2), 1953, 1954, 1954-D(2), 1954-S, 1955-D, 1957-D(3), 1958-D(3), 1959-D)
1 Canadian (1984)

Box 2 of pennies.. pretty good totals but nothing older
15 wheat pennies (1944-D, 1946, 1947-D, 1951-D(2), 1952-D, 1953-D(2), 1956-D, 1957-D(2), 1958-D(4))
8 Canadian (1975, 1976, 1978, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2003)

Box 3 of pennies.. average totals with better variety
11 wheat pennies (1925, 1936, 1937, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1949, 1955-D, 1956-D, 1957, 1957-D)
14 Canadian (1965, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1984, 1987(3), 1989(2))

Also in one of the boxes of pennies I found the following on the back of a 1992-D. (see pics)

Actually I am not sure that a retirement community would necessarily be better. A neighborhood where a lot of older folks still still live on their own at home is probably better. A lot of times when people move (for example to a retirement community) they cash in everything before they move.
