In a fit of boredom tonight, I put all the mintage numbers from www.pcgs.com into a spreadsheet. I only included walking liberty halves, Franklin halves and Kennedy halves. The numbers below are the total mintage for each series (including proofs and mint sets):

Walking Liberty (1916-1947): 485,395,040

Franklin (1948-1963): 481,731,410

Kennedy 90%(1964): 433,460,212

Kennedy 40%(1965-1970): 863,988,880

My best 'guesstimate' is that 1/2-1% of Walking Liberty's and Franklins are available to coin roll hunters - approximately 6-9 million coins. Primarily this percentage is so low because the different appearance of the coins makes them easy to spot and remove from circulation.

Again, just a semi-educated guess is that about 5-10% of 1964 Kennedy halves are still available to coin roll hunters - approximately 21.5-43 million coins. Although they are similar to current halves, many people know to look for that magic date of 1964, plus they are certainly easy to spot just looking at the edge.

I feel reasonably confident in suggesting that there are at least 10% of 1965-1970 halves still available to coin roll hunters - about 86 million coins.

If my numbers are anywhere near accurate, then I'd have to say they are indeed ... very encouraging words.

I sure hope you are right. But even if I find all on the low side I would need $56,750,000 :)

Lets all get to work and make it a reality! I for one will try to get an extra $500 worth tomorrow (over and above my regular 2 boxes)

I tried to do a similar estimate near the end of last year. Here is the link to my post.
