    Thanks to you all....

I read some time ago about hobo nickels on t net in the crh thread. That is why I am posting here....I found this cool coin in 1973 while on vacation with my family.... I just thought it was cool and put it with my marbles, jacks, and other stuff.

Wow that's really cool. And there's no date or LIBERTY on the obverse. Is it a real buffalo nickel and is there a buffalo on the reverse?

Yes it is a buff but no date. I got it back in change from a soda machine .... Change from my quarter for a bottle of squirt. Had no idea that it would ever be special. I just remember never wanting to spend it cause I thought it was cool...funny the things you remember .....

That's really cool that you've kept it and have such a distinct memory of it after all these years. And since you found it so long ago it may be an actual hobo nickel from the depression and not a modern one like the ones I've seen on ebay. Those are the kind of no date buffalos I wish I could find today lol.

Btw, I have a vending machine memory of my own that I remember when I was very young and I think it may have been the same year u found your hobo nickel. I didn't find a coin in the machine, I actually lost my coin(s) in the machine. Well at the same time I was trying to get my coin(s) or the soda or candy (I can't remember for sure what kind vending machine it was) out of the machine some guy walked by me and I asked him if he could help me. Well he tried to help me with the machine but he couldn't get it to work either so I think he said something like "sorry I couldn't help you kid" and he just gave me some coins out of his pocket. Well I remember there was some janitor or some employee that worked in the building where I was at (I think I was at a country club with my mom) and he came over to me and asked me if I knew who that guy was. I said no I didn't know and he said that was Joe Namath. I was very young so I probably recognized the name because he was a big name sports celebrity in those days but I didn't recognize him by face. Well I went and told my mom who I just met and asked if I could try and get his autograph. Well I found him again a little while later at the bar of the country club lounge with some young girl and asked him for his autograph and there wasn't anything to write on so he just signed it on a cocktail napkin. Well idk what ever happened to that cocktail napkin. Unfortunately napkins don't last as long as coins lol.

Sorry for the long winded post but for some reason your memory about how u found this hobo nickel reminded me of this and like u said its funny the things u remember.

Very cool. I remember the time I got that so well partly because it was so different in those days...at least for me. Soda was a major treat...in fact, besides crh as. Hobby I collect vintage sofa signs. While my kids were growing y and u would show them my old coins and stuff that nickel would always become a topic of discussion so I've rid the story many times.....the kids probably know the story better than I do. And.... I'm huge in nostalgia so I enjoyed the broadway joe story very much.

Being a hobo is a choice. This man chose to be homeless, he musta enjoyed the lifestyle.

Lol, u have a good eye BB. I didn't notice that myself because the pic is kinda blurry but u sure r right. Interesting that the designer carved over the date but the date is still known from the obverse. Very cool coin indeed.
