about a year ago I was hitting each bank in my town for $20 in nickels. One bank gave me 10 handrolled rolls...I go out to the car and think the rolls look kinda old, so open one up. Got 10 rolls of 1964 and before nickels! Two buffaloes and about 4 or 5 war nickels were in there, too. I went back to the same teller and asked casually who may have deposited them, and she said it was an older woman, and that same older woman had deposited a roll of quarters that the bank employees thought looked 'short' so they opened it up and had to verify by hand the amount of coins. Turns out they were all Standing Libs and silver Washingtons! The roll appeared short because the Standing libs were so heavily worn that they had become thin. So, my point is that I have definitely had luck with hand rolled nickels!

That's encouraging, thanks Doc. Now I'm itching to get at those rolls.

The results from my nicks in my sig line are results of all hand rolled ones. Out of 3 of those rolls, over half a roll had pre-60's and 4 war nickels. Some lady brought them in with dimes and quarters, which produced no keepers.

I have a box of hand rolled nickels now......the wrappers are really old looking too and I had that same vision as you did when I saw these. I go through them when I can. I am about half way through but nothing special yet. Just some pre-60's.

Gotta tell you this one Dave....I laughed at myself....one nickel made me gasp when I first saw it....it was an old dirty looking 2005 with the buffalo on the reverse....I picked up up looking at the buffalo....yep...fooled me for a second....lol. Thought I had found my first buffalo nickel.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

You're right LJ, before the new nickels it was easy to spot something out of the ordinary but those new buffalos are cause for a pause.

Nothing special from the handrolled $100 nickels. A good amount of pre-60s and some keeper Canadians. The results -
