Can you tell me if I've got this right?

1. Keep any half dollar with an S mint mark;
2. Keep any half dollar after 2001; and
3. Keep any half dollar before 1971.

Is that all I need to know?

What's the story with the Kennedy halves from 1976 (with the "1776-1976" legend)? Anything special about them?

Thanks! ???

I think you got it. Don't worry about the bicentennial halves unless the fall under your rule 1.

If you want to look for double dies you can look for doubling of the trust in 1964-D, 1974-D and 1977-D. You can also look for no FG initials on 1982P, 1983P.

I have tried looking for doubled dies and other varieties but I don't have a market for them in this area. I have found a few 64-D DDO/TDO and they are fun trying to figure out which is which but I can't find anyone interested in them for greater then melt in circulated condition. Most of the time I will pull a coin with a good rim but if it wasn't a 74-D, 87P/D, or 2002-2006 I won't spend the time to look at the motto. Does anyone know of a marketplace to sell these varieties?

Here is another question. I found some very nice Franklins that looked BU when I pulled them. After a few months when I go back to look at them some have a finger print over them (no it's not mine). Should I dip these nicer coins in acetone and then distilled water before I put them away to remove any oils on the coin or do I just play fingerprint roulette?

Thanks all. Printing this for future reference.

Just back from a short trip trip into town; stopped at a small bank and they were happy to give me $110 in halves. They were all hand rolled. 26 dated from 1965 to 1970, 5 were dated 1964, and 1 is a 1963 Ben Franklin.

Bought another load of $200 machine rolled at a separate bank, which included an S 1776-1976 and a 1991 D with a brilliant, mirror surface.
