Today I was trippin'.... Road trippin', CRH style.

I apologize in advance if this gets long winded.

Well today (03-15-2007), I was "forced" to take a vacation day or start losing vacation at work. So, I decided it would be a good idea to try a weekday road trip and see what I could find when the vaults were open (unlike some places on Sat morning).

Anywho, on to a quick bank-by-bank recap. I started out in a few "big city" branch locations and moved on to small town banks after.

Bank #1: Stop to pull out additional cash. Being my typically optimistic self, I decided to pull out more cash than I have ever had on hand before. Started with approx $5000 in cash... Let's just say my wallet was none too happy (so why did they stop making $1000 bills?)...
* Skunk, but I did put in an order for $1000 in half dollars to be received next week.

Bank #2: Was told a couple of weeks ago to stop by this branch on a Thursday since one teller cashes his halves on Friday (I assume into the coin machine). The proper teller was not there...
* Skunk.

Bank #3: I decided to finish filling a $1000 bag on a coin machine that I was told I could purchase once full and it had approx. $800 in it the last time I visited (was $820 this morning). (I had about $300 in halves on me to start just for this purpose). I bought the bag and decided since bags can be searched quick (no wrappers to deal with), I would search it and then cash it plus the other rejects in and keep my cash available for the rest of the trip. In the second handful, out pops a nice 1963-D Ben. After that, handful after handful produced nothing for about half the bag except for a few random quarters (I started to wonder if I got shorted). Well after about 30-45 minutes, I was done. The bag produced:
1 Franklin (1963-D)
8 - 40% Kennedy (1966(2), 1967(3), 1968-D(2), 1969-D)
1 Special Mint Kennedy (2002-D)
35 Quarters
Obviously I did not check for varieties

Bank#4: Cashed in the rejects from the bag: $992.25 (so I paid $2.75 over face for the 10 keepers). Cashed in the rest of my rejects as well.
* Skunk

On my way to the small towns I was heading for, I had to cross through an area of the cities I normally don't make it to, so I decided to try a few of those banks.

Bank #5: Decided to pick up 1 box of pennies and 1 box of nickels for later in case I do not have any luck since I had an account at this bank. Also got $1 in loose halves (skunk on those).

Bank #6: Skunk

Bank #7: Skunk

Bank #8: Just missed out on a half dollar bag (they shipped it the Fed last weekend after it took 5 years to fill).....ARGH!!!! They had 1 clad half dollar and 1 Ike dollar (1974-D).

Now on to a few outer ring suburbs/smallish town banks

Bank #9: Skunk. Could buy the half dollar bag when full, but needed another $750 to fill it and I didn't have that much any more.

Bank #10: Skunk. They recently had all of their half dollars bought out by someone else. Uh-oh, competition afoot, at least its not my "home" turf.

Bank #11: Skunk.

Bank #12: Skunk.

Bank #13: Bought $67.50 from coin machine. Appeared to be a skunk when she was counting it out, but I haven't looked through it yet.

Now for the real small town banks

Bank #14: Bought $241.50 from the coin machine. They also gave me 3 foreign coins they found as they were counting out the halves by hand as they didn't trust the count of the machine. I think I saw 1 40% in the pile, but I haven't gone through it yet. The foreign coins were:
Great Britain, 1 Penny (1962)
Canada, 2 Dollars (1996)
New Zealand, 20 Cents (1987)

Also more signs of competition as they asked if I was the person who had called and asked about half dollars. Guess I got there first. ;D

Bank #15: Bought $35 in hand rolled/loose halves. As I was driving away, my quick "edges only" glance revealed that I got shorted one half as one roll contained a WALL DRUG token of some type.

Bank #16: 15 mile drive for a....skunk

Bank #17: Bought $30 in hand rolled halves. The tellers showed me some old $2's, $50's, and $100's but they wouldn't sell them. Also mentioned that someone from a neighboring town collects halves.. More competition.

Bank #18: Skunk

Bank #19: Bought $11.50 from the coin machine. And since my half totals were nowhere near what I had been hoping for and I was going to have to start heading back home soon to pick up my kids from day care, I also bought a $1000 dime bag from the coin machine after the teller said they roll their own coins there and don't see a lot of missorts.

Bank #20: Teller said she had 7 handrolled rolls of halves turned in from "a collector" and $32 in halves in the coin machine. I asked how much it took to fill the bag, she said $100. So I brought in $68 and filled the bag. I am glad I did as although I haven't looked through them in detail yet, that $32 produced 2 Walkers (1934, 1942) and at least one 40% Kennedy (1967). The quick glance at the 7 rolls only showed 2 foreign coins.

Bank #21: Skunk.

Bank #22: Bought the $195.50 half dollar bag from the coin machine. A quick glance inside had at least a couple of 40%'ers showing as well as some tokens and foreign coins. Hope it works out well when I get around to looking through it.

Bank #23: Back to the bank I ended at the last time I was in this area when I ran out of money, but they didn't run out of halves. The teller said their shipment of halves just came in, "Are you the one who ordered them?". (More competition) After saying that I wasn't, she said they had gotten one extra box, so I thought I was in luck. Unfortunately when she brought it out.... all 2000-P :P :P :P. Just in case, I asked her to check the other two boxes. Also all 2000-P. I am sure the news won't be any better received by the person who ordered the boxes. So I just picked up the $40 in hand rolled halves. A quick glance showed 1 - 90% Kennedy (1964-D).

Time to head toward home and only stop if it appears I have time

Bank #24: No halves, but I did pick up a $50 bag of pennies for later. (I had cleaned this bank out a few weeks ago with decent results).

Bank #25: Picked up a box of nickels and a box of dimes since I didn't have many other stops on the way home and a ton of cash let. Skunked no halves.

Bank #26: Spotted this bank the last time I drove by, but didn't have time to stop. Picked up $120 in loose halves (not searched yet). And as I was talking to the teller, she said they had $800 in rolled SBA/SAC dollars as well with strong hints that she'd like to get rid of them. Although I have never searched SBA/SAC dollars, I decided to take her up on her offer, but I only wanted to buy the hand rolled ones as I didn't feel like paying $1 for each foreign coin found and little chance of finding much that it is valuable to make up the difference. As she was counting them out, she pulls out 4 rolls of Ikes. I said, "That's what I was asking for earlier, I'll take those too!". Made me really glad I had decided to buy the other dollar coins as the Ikes would remain buried otherwise. Ended up with $625 in handrolled SBA/SAC dollars and $80 in Ikes.

On my way to pick up my kids from daycare, I had to drive by two other banks that I normally do not stop at since they are not normally on my way. Looking at the time, I thought I had a few extra minutes, so why not.

Bank #27: Skunk.

Bank #28: Skunk on halves. Decided to buy a box of quarters so I would have bought some of every coin type in circulation today. Also tried to buy a box of nickels, but they were short so I only bought 15 rolls.

When I got home and was looking at the cash I had left, I realized I had 2 star notes. 1 $100 star note and a $1 star note. Neither in great shape, but still kinda cool as I got them as change.

The picture below is what I have to look through arranged by denomination and coin type. The halves are in separate piles depending on where they came from with the exception of one pile combining all of the smaller totals and some of the finds from the day are arranged in front. You may also notice that one of my cats thinks that the SBA/SAC dollars have a smell about them.

I will update later with what I find.

I also am using a vacation day tomorrow, but since my daughter started throwing up everywhere tonight, I am doubting that I can do too much road trippin' tomorrow like I had planned. Either way I have enough to keep me busy for awhile.

Well first of all I hope your child feels better soon. Second, I lover your cat, it's cute! :)

I sure hope you find some keepers in all of that! Wow, what an assortment of coins to look thru. I'd love to bring home that much in one day but it's too heavy to carry. I need to rent a man to carry all the boxes of coins. LOL I'm eager to see your finds, especailly interested in the dime bag for some odd reason.

Its a "small town" dime bag so hopefully it will be good.

I've had more coinage than this before, but it was always low end stuff (pennies and nickels mainly).

GMan, I'm awe struck at your road trip. Are you sure that was just one day?? How in the world did you find time to check some of the halves on the fly? Didn't you encounter any lines at the banks?

BTW, maybe you should use the phrase "bag of dimes." "Dime bag" can mean something entirely different to the wrong people! ;D

Good luck on your searching!

Gman,

Thats a road trip! Ive done similar but only for halves. I admire your persistance
and variety you search. Looks and sounds like you enjoy it alot and thats all
that matters !! Hope you find alot of keepers in that assortment.

That is the reality of CRH. It takes work and dedicated persistance. Thanks much
for your detailed day. Make sure you post your final results !

Good luck.

Yes, this was all in one day. The whole road trip from the time I dropped my daughter off at daycare until I picked her up was just over 150 miles.

Immy said:

I bring my searching "supplies" with me on all road trips, just in case I need to use them. In this instance, I parked in a mall parking lot that was close to where I was dumping them and since it was a bag I didn't need to open any rolls. In hindsight I should have waited and searched it at home as I could have gone to a few more banks instead of "wasting" 45 minutes to an hour searching and cashing in.

Search supplies include:
1 Rubbermaid shoe box - The lid works as a portable table and has a lip which helps keep coins from rolling off and also its a rounded lip so its easily used to flip over coins.

1 letter opener - in case factory rolled coins need to be searched on the road as it is easier on the fingers (I don't reroll so I don't care about the paper).

1 magnifier - in case I see something of interest that I need a better look at.

1 red book just for reference (has yet to be used on a road trip, but I still bring it in case I come across something unusual I am unfamiliar with).

appropriate maps, bank addresses, etc.

Some canvas bags.

1 Casino cup for misc (change, etc).

Immy said:

When I say "small town", I mean some of the towns had a population of < 400. Not much of a line in the middle of the day on Thursday at those banks. Though most also close at 4 PM, so it kind of cuts off the road trip early if you actually have more time.

Immy said:

Just checking if anyone was paying attention. ;D

I'll try to post some partial results later tonight.

Will update later as I finish the other coins.

Re: Today I was trippin'.... Road trippin', CRH style.

Finally got through the "dime bag".

Results were typical of what I see in this area for the amount (4 boxes) for silver with a few more Canadian dimes than are typical.

The bag produced 5 silver roosevelts
1 - 1953-S
1 - 1954-S
1 - 1962-D
2 - 1964-D

24 Candian(1968 nickel, 1973(2), 1976, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982(2), 1985(3), 1986, 1992, 1996, 1997, 1999(2), 2000(2), 2002-P(2), 2004-P, 2006-P)

And 2 Foreign
Great Britain, 5 Pence (1991)
Cayman Islands, 5 Cents (1996)

And one mistrike of some type where the rim is really high on one side.

Note: I have been averaging 1 silver/42 rolls and 1 Canadian/20 rolls

Time to start on the boxes.

That's called a wire-edge strike, I found a penny like that once. It's caused when a die strikes the blank with too much pressure, causing some of the metal to be forced up between the blank and the collar. Neat find! Congrats on those dime finds.

Thanks Immy. I didn't know what the term was, but I was guessing an overpressure when I saw it. Are these worth anything?

I forgot to mention, the bag of dimes included my first 2007 dime, a 2007-D.

Also I now finished the box of quarters.
Ended up with 1 Foreign coin and no silvers or proofs.
France, 1 Franc (1991)

GMan, congratulations on the 5 silver Rosies! I think that's decent, but of course I know we all would love to find more. :D Last year I only searched 2 or 3 boxes of dimes and I didn't find any silver dimes. This time around I tried to purchase rolls of dimes turned into the banks that were wrapped by the customers and I think I'm having better luck this way. It's so exciting to find a silver dime! :) You sure find a lot of foreign coins as well.

When I was on vacation in Minneapolis last year a friend drove me to about 6-8 banks and I asked for halves. It was difficult to find any,but one bank had a box. It produced one 1964 silver halve. It was a Wells Fargo & Company and they were very friendly. My friend sat down with them and reviewed her accounts and she got a better rate on them, and they gave me the cool stagecoach bank you see as my avatar. :) I did ask if I could purchase the bag of halves from the coin counter machine but they so no they didn't do that. Oh well, I gave it my best shot. lol

Between Canadian coins and foreign coins I have almost a casino cup full this year already. Other than Canadian which I find frequently do to my proximity to Canada, I bet I find the same ratio of foreign coins as others. Some banks will just give you the foreign coins if you ask as they can't use them, others do something with them. I was told by one bank that rolls their own coin that they just roll them into the rolls and hand them out. I would think that would be illegal since they are knowingly passing out foreign coins as US coins, but since its not a bank around me, I don't really care too much.

Yeah, WF has been very nice to me too (at least most branches have been). My wife used to work for them. One of the benefits in their handbook was "Free coins". Wish I was CRHing then like I do now. Oh well, that was a few years ago already. And most of the WF locally don't even have bags anymore just the self serve coin machines with a big bin, so not an option. Those that do, "usually" won't sell the bags to you, though I have found a couple that will. If you ask the worst they can say is no.

The other question that I sometimes have asked with limited success if I can't buy the bag is if I can do an even exchange with coins in the coin machine bag to ones in my pocket. For that you have to ask when they aren't busy, or else there is no chance. (Usually works best when you have younger tellers too. ::) ) It is nice when it works though because you only need to buy the silver and the teller's hands get all dirty and not yours. Note to anyone who tries this, let the teller handle the coins so there is appearance of you trying to steal any. Or better yet find a coin machine that uses clear plastic bags and just point out the ones you want through the bag then there is no question, just may not be able to see every coin.
