Hi,

I went through a couple of boxes of halves tonight and pulled out a 1969. The strange thing is it does not sound like sliver when I drop it on my desk. It even sounds completely different than a clad half as well. I has a very solid muffled sound and settles very quickly when dropped on the desk. Has anyone ever come across something like this? Thanks.

I doubt it would be a Chinese fake. No value in it. Probably a magicians coin.

It weighs the same as another 40%. I have attached a picture.

I had four rolls of clad halves that appeared to be burned in a fire. Several of them had a strange almost hollow thud sound.

I'm betting magician's coin. Place it in a thick plastic tumbler, place your hand over the top and shake it hard. If I'm right, it'll pop open fairly quickly...unless someone has glued it shut.

Thanks. I will give that a try.

I've gotten a 40%er like this, it is like a "dud" when dropped on the table, I have no explanation for it, though, sorry. It is probably a fake. There are some fake silvers out there. Yours might even be worth more than its melt value.

I agree with Arkie. You could also give it a healthy toss on its edge at a cement floor and it should pop open. Magicians coins generally weigh the same the same as a standard half

No luck with getting this to pop open. I gave it a healthy shake in a plastic tumbler and threw it on a cement paver sidewalk.

Ive never found a silver Magicians coin before but the clad ones Ive found have a hollow sound and feel lighter than regular half coins. Just a few days ago I finally opened a Magicians coin I found earlier this year by shaking it in an empty coffee can which worked pretty well. But if your coin doesn't sound hollow Id be surprised if its a Magicians coin though. If u have questions about it maybe u could take it to your LCS next time u r there. Looks like its in really nice condition in that first pic u posted.

Good luck and HH!

One give away that it is a magicians coin I have noticed is a rotation from the front and back of the coin that is not consistent with a normal half.
