I've gone through so many half dollar coins that i notice patterns in the edges of the clad ones i check. Usually on the first roll i can tell wether the box will have any silver or a chance of silver. Its has if the coins have been rolled so much that the sides have a more copper look with very little dirt. I'm pretty accurate at my predicitions by the first roll. Has anyone else got to this point? Now i know that if you see lots of marked coins its usually not a good sign but doesn't mean you will find no silver.

I can do you one better. With about a 75% accuracy, I could predict how many silvers were in my boxes of halves before I ever saw the box.

Some of my best boxes have been loaded with marked coins. I remember one box about 2 years I opened and saw about a dozen or so coins with a thick black sharpie mark across the face. No silver Enders. The box produced 14 40% 3 1964 and a walker. It's really all about luck and timing.

Can i ask what kind of volume youve done? Most boxes are skunks...i think you might be over thimking it.

Good scores have nothing to do with how often the clad has been rolled and rolled and rerolled, but has to do with how many silvers somebody took to the bank....

Ding ding ding- it only matters now when someone dupms a collection or handful of silver they grabbed from parents/grandparents stash

I do between 15-20 boxes a week. All boxes are picked up within 70 miles of each other. Various amounts at each bank. Yes the clad coins do make a lot of difference. I'm thinking my halves are rolled at one location and delievered to all my banks. I see lots of similarities in the clad coins i receive, wether it be marks or edges that lack dirt. I know it may sound crazy but collection dumps are never found in boxes with these kinds of "clad coins" i speak of, ones that lack the more dirty apperance.

. . . if the coins have been rolled so much that the sides have a more copper look with very little dirt. . . .
Do you mean casino halves where the reeding is worn and the edge looks like polished copper?
Or, do you mean fully reeded halves that lack edge toning?
Or, do you mean something else?

It sounds like a purely qualitative conclusion. It wouldn't surprise me much if you found rolls within a box or set of boxes with similar edge appearance. But, I respectfully disagree that there could be any prediction from opening one or two rolls as to what the remaining rolls will exhibit (even for edge appearance let alone silver).

The reeding of the coins doesn't matter as much as the fact it looks to be less handled and not rolled as much. Dirty edges, edges that are darker is a good sign. I also know if i see coins that have the ender rolled circular mark on them and are not an ender coin. That's not a good sign. Its hard for me to describe but i make accurate predictions all the time. I know I'm crazy and way to into trying to figure out how the coins circulate.

I for one have no clue as to what youre gettng at but if its working for you then...
My question is if you open the 1st couple rolls and see what you can predict as a bad box do you still open all the rolls?

I know its hard to describe lol. Yes i still open the rolls. I ethier bag dump or slice them. If i leave them machine rolled then it creates way more work for the tellers.

I believe maverick once made comments on what I'm trying to describe. Hopefully he will chime in at some point.

I actually know exactly what you're saying and I feel the same way.

Look all im trying to say is that silver gets mixed in with whatever coins are there...(unless youre getting youre same dumped coins back a lot). My best score was 191 40% that was mixed in with a dated marked coin from three months previously.

I think i might know what you might mean in terms of dirt though. I do bags of halves not boxes. The longer a bag takes to fill up (usually months and months) the more random stuff, trash and dirt end up in the bag, and usually the more silver ends up in the bag as well. Bags that are somebody elses dumps are typically very clean.
