Is it pointless to search quarters?

Hey all -

I've been dabbling in havles & doing ok, but I had a question about quarters...

Over the last month, I've had the opportunity to search the quarters collected from some mall vending machines before they were deposited into the bank... around $500-$700 worth in each of the three batches I checked.

Out of all three, I found ONE (1) silver quarter... came across a good number of 65-69 dates, but the 64's and earlier seem to be almost non-existant.

Do any of you search quarters? I'm really compelled to check through it since I'm able to, but I'm starting to think I'm just wasting my time...

I did find some older dollar bills (63A, 63B, 69, 85)... not sure if they're worth keeping or not, but I grabbed them due to the age.

Quarters have always been lousy at producing silver. My guess would be because they're so widely used (one site called them the "workhorse" of American coinage) that a stray silver one is easily noticed and plucked from circulation. This year I've gone thru probably $1,000-$1,500 from casino slots and only found three so far.

I find more silver quarters searching the teller trays versus roll hunting. In fact today I picked up another silver dime from the teller tray.

Try a newspaper route. Usually 5 or more each week --- just Sundays. Also, one 1976 silver (proof?) bicentennial.

In my opinion I don't think its pointless if you want to find silver. You'll never find any if you don't look. I started trying to fill a few Whitman quarter folders so that gives me a little extra motivation to search quarters. If I don't find any silvers, at least I will be able to have something to show from my searches.

According to figures I have, there were 3,361,107,601 silver Washington quarters minted for circulation from 1932 through 1964.The majority of those have probably been pulled from circulation or lost.

My figures show circulation strikes of 69,898,906,131 clad quarters from 1965 through March of 2007.

The odds do not favor your finding enough silver to make roll hunting quarters profitable.

I found 2 silver quarters in about 10,000 dollars worth of quarters last year.I had to sort and roll the money regardless so the quarters were bonuses.

The state quarter series has drawn a lot of attention on quarters. People are getting used to looking at their quarters after 8 years of changing designs. Anything unusual is getting noticed. We're seeing the same behavior with nickels now that the Lewis & Clark series has run and ended with a redesign, and we'll see the same behavior with pennies when it's redesigned in 2009.

But there's no planned changes in the near future for the dimes. The time to search those is now, before attention is broughtto them.

Also, has anyone heard of what design the Mint'll use after the State Quarters end?
