What did a previous coin collector do to this Eisenhower coin?

I got this Eisenhower coin from the bank in a plastic medicine-like container.

Look at the photo below.
See the square shaped discoloration covering Eisenhower's head.
The coin has the same discoloration on the opposite side.
The discolored area is not the least bit sticky.



There were several other Eisenhower coins in the container with a similar appearance.

It looks to me like the previous coin collector had placed, then removed,
some sort of film to protect the coin from the adjacent coins.

What did the coin collector put on the coin to protect it from other coins in the plastic bottle?

Any ideas?

Probably a piece of thick paper.Some paper is acidic or thats tarnish on the outside of the square of the coin.

Although I can't find any Examples online for some reason,
it looks to me like someone placed it in a Square window Coin holder.

perhaps one for a Half Dollar sized coins.

& it sat in the sun for a good period of time

someone tried to give this here Ike a noogie, messed the coin up pretty bad. the good news is, as rough as the coin looks, their knuckles are now ruined. They probably had to go to the hospital, and are now scarred for life.

As they used to say back in world war II and later the 1950s, "Dont mess with Ike"
