Hello Fellow Forum Friendlies, I have just now returned from 6 glorious days of CRHing. I drove thru 13 states(Texas,Arkansas,Mississippi,Alabama,Georgia,South Carolina,North Carolina,Virginia,West Virginia,Kentucky,Ohio,
Tennessee,and Indiana for 30 minutes to visit a casino). We drove 3450 miles and searched over 25,000 half dollars
while driving. Our take for the 6 days was just over 800-40%ers,75-90%ers,6 Benjamins, and oddly 9 of those gold-plated (1960-1980) overstamped halves in one roll. I have been working on my opening speech for the tellers. Here is what I have come up with so far.
"Good Morning/Afternoon, I was wondering if you,the other tellers, or the bank have any half-dollars. I appreciate your offer for the "Gold Dollars", but I am really looking for half dollars. How many would I like you ask, all of them would be nice, no matter how many or how few that would be. Yes I am serious,I will take 4 boxes if you have them. I am terribly sorry but I am new in town and don't have an account with your bank but I am looking for a new bank " These are just some of the long list of useless questions asked everytime I ask for halves.

That's quite a trip Jim! Sounds like you did a lot of searching and came up with some good coins.

You got me thinking, so I did some figuring. Here is what I came up with.

800 - 40% Kennedy
75 - 90% Kennedy + 6 - 90% Franklin = 81 - 90% total

Per coinflation.com 40% were worth $2.06 when I looked and 90% were worth $5.05.

Assuming you could sell you halves at 80% of that value (which was my most recent sale at a coin show), that would put their price at $1.65/40% half and $4.04/90% half.

So the sale price would be 4.04 * 81 + 1.65 * 800 = $1647.24

Now subtract the costs:
Cost of buying the coins = 881 * 0.50 = $440.50

Cost of gas: (I assumed 25 mpg and $2.75/gal)
3450 miles/25 mpg = 138 Gallons * $2.75/gallon = $379.50

Hotel: (assuming you didn't sleep in the car or for free)
$50/night * 5 nights = $250

Food: (assuming you left after breakfast the first day and returned before dinner the last day and you are traveling alone)
5 Breakfasts @ $2.50 each, 6 lunches @ $5.00 each, 5 dinners @ $10.00 each = $92.50

Car Depreciation
This will vary depending on your car, but I tried two different options to see how much the mileage would change the car's selling value. I tried a standard 2000 Chevy Malibu with 100,000 miles and 103,500 miles. The Private party sales difference quotes from edmunds.com were around $200.
I repeated the test with a 2004 Chevy Malibu with 50,000 and 53,500 miles and the difference came back around $300.
So, for arguments sake I will say $250 worth of depreciation.

Car Wear and Tear:
Not really sure what this will be, but for 3500 miles, probably an oil change and contributing to earlier failures on some parts. I guessed $50 (could be way off).

So to get to net profit
Net Profit = $1647.24 - 440.50 - 379.50 - 250 - 92.50 - 250 -50 = $184.74

Now that is with a lot of assumptions as mentioned above. Not sure how accurate some of the numbers are, but at least it gives an idea.

Sure I will, I started in Texarkana and drove towards Little Rock. We cruised thru LR and spent the first night outside Memphis.For those keeping track, we left at 5pm so we got further than I would have guessed. We hit Tennessee,Kentucky and on into Cincinnati(our biggest haul of silver came out of Cincy).Took a short detour to the Casino just across the border in Indiana. We stayed south of Dayton and went to the biggest air museum I have ever been to. The Wright Patman Air Force Museum is in 6 of the biggest hangars. Every (almost every) plane the US Air Force has flown is on display. Including a B52,B2,B1,F-117,B-24,26,25,17,P-51 and a $hitload more and did I mention it is absolutely FREE. We worked our way thru West Virginia,Virginia,Both Carolinas,and turned West to wards home. Georgia was a goldmine of silver,Alabama had some hot spots and then we kicked butt in Mississippi.
We alternate drivers and searchers while we plug along between banks. At the end of the trip we had filled 15 of those canvas bank bags with halves. We dumped all 25,000 at one bank in Texarkana(they just love to see us pull up) 42 minutes of coin dumping and we are ready to hit the road again.

Did the machine you dumped into have bags that hold $500 each?I have read this amount on here before and it seems to be the most common amount a bag holds.

That would mean you filled 25 bags!

Did they charge you a per bag fee for accepting all that coin at once?If not you must have a huge amount of $ deposited and a long history with that bank,I would think.

It seems like banks back east are more friendly to crh's than anywhere else.You have much more patience than anyone I know to have searched all those banks and driven that many miles in such a short time.Thanks.
