I check date and mintmark of all coins (of all denominations) and as I am looking at them I pick out the keepers as well as the date/mintmark combinations that I check for errors on for the denomination. Once I have completed searching, I then check for errors on the ones I picked out. I usually average about 1 coin/sec to do the date/mintmark search portion picking out the possible error dates that I look at when searching bags and a little slower when searching rolls as it takes time to open the rolls.

I look for the following errors:

For pennies: 1969-S DDO, 1970-S DDO, 1972 DDO, 1983 DDR, 1984 Double Ear, 1992-D close AM, 1995 DDO, 1998 Wide AM, 1999 Wide AM, 2000 Wide AM.

For nickels: all the ones I check are pre-1960 (keepers) except the 2005 speared buffalo (don't remember offhand if it was a P or D) so I just flip these over as I am searching and don't pick them out since they are quick and the error is visible to the naked eye (or at least I believe it is).

For dimes: 1967, 1968 DDO, 1970, 1970-D, 1982-P No mintmark.

For quarters: I know there are 5 date/mintmarks, but I am not at home and can't remember the combinations.

For halves: 1971 DDO, 1971-D DDO, 1972 DDO, 1972-D No initials, 1973 no initials, 1973-D DDO, 1974-D DDO, 1977-D DDO, 1982-P No initials, 1983-P No initials, 1990-P No initials.

Note: I am not positive that all the halves listed have a DDO option, but as I was trying to find which ones did a while ago I came across people claiming these dates. There are also silver ones that have errors, but since they are keepers already I process them differently.

Also note that on a thread somewhere here is a link to a site containing picutres 5 common error coins which is where some of my errors come from, the rest are listed in the Redbook. If I become aware of a high $$$ error coin I would also look for that. Otherwise, I am only looking for the common errors since error checking otherwise is way to time consuming compared to the payoff IMHO. For example, coppercoins.com has a ton of penny error varieties, to look for all of those just takes too long compared to the number found.

Hope that helps, if I remember and someone else doesn't post it first I will post a link to the site mentioned above.

I edge search for both silver and proofs. The edges of proof coins and 87's tend to be really sharp so they are easy to pull. I will also pull most good looking edges to see if they are the 72,74,77 DD or 83 no P.

I read all the dates, if you edge check only you'd miss some 40%, especially if they are casino-worn. You'd also miss '87s and post '01s too, not to mention errors.

I first look at the edges....pluck the silver & any obvious looking proof edges....then I pick the stack up with one hand about an inch or so and let them fall into my other hand listening for that distinctive clinking silver sound....then check every date.

I check the edges for silver first. Then do a quick scan of dates and for foreign or anything unusual. Only if I have time to kill or I'm in a "coin mood" do I look at the coins in detail. Buying the Cherrypicker's Guide is a priority, so after that, I'd like to look closer with a more educated eye.

Me my wife and our 3 kids all search. So it don't take much time for us to cherry pick the goodies out. Then we hunt for error dates and i do the final inspection. Our biggest batch of coins was 2 boxes each of cents, nickels, and dimes, and we had it done in 3 hours. My youngest 4 can not read the dates but is just as good as anyone else at flipping the cents and pulling the wheat's, Buffalo's, foreigns, and steel. He runs a rare earth magnet to find steel 1 so far.
