Alright guys and gals, I found a 1942 Nickel no mint mark on the back, I don't know much about the nickels, is this common? Instead of me endlessly searching online, I figured I would pic your brains. Thanks for all of your help!! 20151103_082652.jpg 20151103_082707.jpg

If there's a mintmark above the building then it's 35% silver

Your nickel is semicommon. The one to look for is the 1942 D (mint mark on the right of Monticello). You can keep or toss it back. Personally, I only keep the silver war nics and nickels minted less than 20 million as well as 1939 just for fun.

1942 was the transition year from nickel to silver. Not all 42's contain silver. Only the coins with the mint mark above Monticello contain silver and the content is 35%.

1942. Philadelphia Mint. Composition 75% copper, 25% nickel. Whitman's "The Official Red Book, A Guide Book Of United States Coins", usually referred to as "The Red Book", should be a permanent feature of your research material. It has basic information on common issue coins, including composition of the coins. I pick up a new one every two years.
