Magician's Coin

I was dumping halves into the coin counter and it rejects a 1999-D. I toss it back into the hopper and it rejects it again. I toss it on the counter and it sounds weird. I'm like, shazam! that's a magician coin. I look at it and I can see the cut line. So, now the question is how do I get it open? I tried tossing it on the counter *sharply* but that didn't do it. Anyone have more experience with these than me?

Re: Magician's Coin

Try dropping it onto a hard surface from a height of four or five feet. After a few drops, it should pop open.

You're not going to hurt the "coin", so don't give up.

It will likely have either an English penny or Mexican peso inside. Let us know.

I've found about ten of these this year, and save them for they are novelties.

Keep us posted. I just love the novelty of those coins. I have two of them. They are a great conversation piece.

Re: Magician's Coin

I have accumulated about 25 of these coins. The Mexican peso and the English penny variety. I was very surprised by them.
When I got my first one I actually discovered it by the clack sound it made. you know how silver has that beautiful ring sound. Well these have that dull almost plastic thud sound when dropped on a counter ( Hollow sound ).
Anyway I showed it to someone at work, and a couple of day's later he brought me an article in the newspaper about Spy Coins.
Well I thought I had found A spy coin for the longest time and pondered taking it to the authorities till I found more with different coins inside.
I finally searched the web and found a Magic shop on line who is selling these things for around $25
I'm in the tool design Business and knew that the cost and precision to make this coin was worth a lot more than 50 cents. so it figures it was something produced at a higher rate than one or two at a time. other than 2 half dollar's and an English penny/Mexican peso. Machine time, set up and talented operator would make the cost of these coins allot.

OK so how did I get mine open. Well I used a razor blade and have dropped them on their edge to pop them open. in one article on the magic coin it said there is a pin hole in the R where it says IN GOD WE TRUST, but none of mine have the pin hole and most are a bitch to open. Sooo what the hell kinda magic coin is that !!! ???? lol :D

When I started my search for answers on this mystery coin based on the spy coin article, I found an interesting story on line ( HISTORACLE/TRUE ) about spy coins. Involving a coin a newspaper boy a Russian spy and a U2 piolet who was shot down over Russia. I don't have a link but goggle the key words and you might have some luck. by the way it was a hollowed out nickle that had a piece of paper in it with a tiny coded message on it. Here is the end of the story. below

Rudolph Abel

Born William Fischer by German parents, this Soviet spy served in a variety of positions within Soviet intelligence. Taking the name of Rudolph Abel after the real Abel died, Fischer was sent to America in 1948 to reorganize the Soviet "illegal" spy network in the U.S. Fischer was arrested by the FBI in 1957 and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was released in 1962 in exchange for downed U-2 pilot Gary Powers. Fisher died of lung cancer in Moscow in 1971.

The things we learn through this hobby/addiction, very enjoyable. 8)

Another suggestion for a possible use from one of my seedy friends is to fill it with cocaine to conceal it when crossing the border LOL. Haven't herd from him since i gave him a couple before he left for CASINO WINDSOR across the border..???!!! LOL.

Re: Magician's Coin

Haven't found one of those coins yet. The only Half Dollar Novelty coin I found was a 1983 Gold plated Kennedy with the dates 1960 -1985 stamped on the front. Found it in a box just last week.

Re: Magician's Coin

Magicians use a bang ring to open these coins. It costs about $5. Just google for Scotch Soda Bang Ring and you will see what it is.

Directions that used to ship with these coins would state that in the absence of a proper bang ring, the coins can be separated by shaking them in a glass jar. A brand new one can take up to a minute of shaking to get apart, a worn one may come apart with one or two shakes.

Dropping, or even throwing, the coin hard onto a surface can damage a perfectly good trick coin. the edges are extremely thin and do dent easily. Once they dent, the trick coin is never the same again.

Can you find them by edge searching??

NO,

not only will you not find them by edge searching, you may even miss them when looking at the date of each and every coin. They are machined perfectly to look like a normal half dollar. The dead give away is their sound and that they are underweight, but when searching hundreds of coins, those are two characteristics that can be easily overlooked.

Re: Magician's Coin

I have found 5 of these coins in the last month or so. Two of them have the centavos inside, two have the 1967 English penny, and one is quite unusual, it has a US quarter inside of it and inside the quarter it has a US dime. I call it my 85 cent piece. You can't find them edge searching and I usually find mine when I toss each coin I'm looking through on to the pile of halves I have already searched. The Magician coins just make a thud sound no ring to them at all. To open them put them in a jar or Tupperware dish and shake it up. It will come apart after a few seconds.

Re: Magician's Coin

Well I got anoter one today.
And I missed it searching the box of 500 but as so many times before, it got rejected at the coin counting machine. Out of ppproxametly 30 that I have found more than half have been discoverd this way. Like the previous post said scanning edges you'd never notice.
Dead givaway's are
1. the sound. ( THUD )
2. since they are 2 seperate coins joined togeather the back and front will usually be misalligned.
3. the coin machine rejects them. LOL

Re: Magician's Coin

I "almost" got one. I had gone through a box of halves and then put them in a bank bag. I took the bag to the casino to cash them in. As the coin counter was running, the lady reached in and pulled out the back half of one of these coins. She said they couldn't take it as a half. :D The front half and whatever coin was inside of it went through the machine I guess.

Re: Magician's Coin

Cool, thanks for the picture. I take it there are collapsible kinds and ones that conceal other coins?
I'd love to find one. That would be fun.
