Top 25 hardest Jefferson Nickels to find based on 180,000 coins searched in 8 mos.

Here's what I've done so far since 2/23/16 when I embarked on this new adventure... Since I'm on the West coast, S's are are a little easier to find than other places, while P's are harder to find than most areas. That said, I do think that me finding only 1 1945-D, and 2 1945-Ps are statistical anomalies which should correct themselves over time.

Other things to note: Both the 1943-P and 1943-S War Nickels are relatively easy to find. In fact, 33 Jeffersons have been more difficult to find to date than the 43-S, of which I've found 23. Also, note that the 2009-P nickel is tied for #22 overall, and is the 13th most difficult non-silver Jefferson to find, with only 12 found to date. To put this in proper perspective, I've found 2 1/2 times more obsolete coins (28 Buffalos, and 2 V nickels - 30 total) than 2009-Ps.

Thanks for the list. Very interesting.

Surprisingly I have found quite a few 1955 & 2009 dates ( but then I'm on the East Coast).
I know because I'm using 1955 as my cut off date for Jefferson keepers and the 2009's go back to circulation.

Maybe T-net can set up a coast to coast exchange program.

Awesome list man! I have been working on filling out my collection for a long time and I'm starting to see that it may just take a lot longer lol. $160k is insane! Great stats though, thanks for being so thorough with your research!

I love the stats, but I gotta figure this out....

$160k in 8 months. That's 16,000 boxes... Which means you searched about 67 boxes a day... Of nickels.... That is insane, but I'm leaning towards impossible.

Is this all denominations? Or a typo? Not trying to give you a hard time, I'm really interested in what the stats are based of.

I have no problem finding 2009-Ds (I've found 305 to date)... But 2009-Ps just aren't out here... and the ones I do find usually have very little, if any, mint luster. If anyone wants to hoard me some and exchange for other coins or money, I'm all in!

There's no dollar sign. :) 160K nickels searched = $8,000.

Thanks... though it's 160k coins - there's no dollar sign in my post. $8,000 worth (80 boxes) is what I've searched so far... 20,000 coins per month on average, though it's been more like 30,000 the past few months.

Gotcha :icon_thumright:

The 2009 p is hard out this way. Weird enough my first 2009 was a S proof. I've found one 2009p.

My white whales right now are the 55p and the 39d.

Out of curiosity, what part of the country are you in? I'm in southern California, just north of L.A...

That's very bizarre that your first 2009 was an S proof...

In totaling my figures, I found today that I've actually have gone through almost $9000 worth of nickels (177,920 coins) to date. And I've only found 1 each of your two white whales.

I'm in Tacoma, Wa

My nickel volume is nowhere near yours. I'm at about $700 for the year :tongue3: But nickels are a great change of pace and I really dont think there's much competition in my area for them.

I have found a 1950d in a mwr. In great shape, full steps too

Could you please send us some rain? We're in a 5 year drought down here in SoCal. Thanks! ;)

That's awesome you found such a nice 1950-D... it is now the only regular circulation Jefferson nickel I have only found once in circulation (almost 30 years ago)...

Nickels are definitely my favorite now... I actually got back into CRH early this year as a result of not being able to find 2009 dated coins in circulation.... My early focus was actually on Quarters... my goal was to complete a modern quarter set from circulation. I actually am still one coin short there - the 2009-P North Mariana Islands coin is still eluding me. When I discovered that so many War Nickels, Buffalos, and key date Jeffersons were still out there, I decided to move my focus. My totals searched per month reflect this trend:

Feb: 1200
Mar: 6200
Apr: 8380
May:13800
Jun:26240
Jul:36100
Aug:32480
Sep:35960
Oct:16640
