Penny searching for IH ?

I'm planning on switching to Penny hunting. How many boxes will I have to search, on average, before I find an Indian Head? Feedback from experienced penny searchers is greatly appreciated. 7up

100 boxes gave up about 6 Indians. one was a '64 Fatty in G/VG. if you find one the color will be sweet chocolate. look for old KG's and 1800's foreign. in 4 years I have dug about 30, some nice, many toasted a FE is now my goal for a box------ dug 3, all are barely clinging to life

Port_Ewen....Sounds like about on average 17 boxes to find an Indian...not too bad, I can do that.....BTW, what does KG and FE mean?

Uh, 52. I search every week.

I found my only indian head a couple of years ago in a customer wrapped roll from my local credit union. I tend to find more wheaties there as well. I have yet to find an indian in a box & i usually find only 7-10 wheats.

Flying Eagle, Canada King George--1952 & older. got an 1883 Austro- Hungarian 1 Krajczar once--- reverse is nearly same as 1859 Indian. a few WWII 3rd Reich Pfennigs. my 100+ boxes also yielded about 80 rolls of QE Canada coppers 1953- 1996 & about 8 rolls of 1997 & newer junko cents seek and ye WILL find some great cents----make sense?

I find one about every 2 years. Perhaps 1 every hundred boxes.

It seems to depend on the area, but lots. I only found one last year and it was in pretty bad shape.

Are you getting into this specifically because you want an IH? If so, save your time, save your gas, and save your money. A couple of dollars will buy you a sack of common date IH's on the internet. They're not expensive at all. If you're interested in pennies for other reasons and are merely curious about IH's...well, as I said, it will probably be a lot of boxes before you see one, if ever.

I used to search bags of cents from the coin machine from my credit union. The 5 that I found from this source averaged 1 IH for every 35 bags (equivalent to 1 per 70 boxes).
It seemed to me like there were more coming from those bags than from what you would find in boxes - possibly because boxes are more likely to be diluted by new coin and/or searched coin.

I've nearly stopped CRH these days so I have no idea if that average still holds.

I do 2 boxes of cents a week and average 2 Indian Heads per year. 2016 was a banner year, with 5 (1892, 1896, 1900, 1902, 1905) found, the last one on Dec. 29! All 5 were found between September and the end of the year. The best I ever did was 4 in one box, about 20 years ago (2 1879 and 2 1907). Since I found my first Indian Head in a CWR in 1979 (a 1901), I've found about 100 or so. I stopped counting at 50 and that was in the 90's. The oldest I've found is 1865, although I've also found 2 Civil War tokens, which are slightly older.

That's a lot of good info from a long-time CRHer! I remember when CRH was big back in the 70's--until banks started charging fees and the hobby almost died overnight. And thanks for your honesty, Scott.
