I was at the coin shop today when someone brought in a early 60's proof set (with some other coinds) which was unopened the person said they never opened it. I bought it off the dealer, a friend of mine as you never know what might be in it. I asked him if he thought it was truly unopened or was resealed or sealed by moisture over the years. He said he thought it was in fact unopened. I paid the same price as for an opened set.

Could it have a deep cameo Franklin in it?

I am not going to open it, will leave it as it is.

I wonder how many "unopened" sets are truly unopened and how can you really tell?

I'd open it - to the pliofilm level anyway.

In addition to the possibility of a (rare) deep cameo franklin, the philly proof sets are also known to (rarely) have doubling on the cent reverse or dime reverse.

I would love a deep Cameo and would look for doubling

BUT it being unopened it would always be a possiblity and a maybe or an is...

The wife thinks I should open it

May be worth more on feebay if left unopened.

I agree.
Definitely worth more unopened (as long as you hype it up as such). Something like...
"Unopened Proof Set: Possible rare Cameo or Deep Cameo Inside"
I'd sell it sealed. Unless yer a gambler & want to try for maybe getting a Cameo coin - long shot tho. Cams are pretty tough in the earlier sets.

If I sell it then I don't have it...

I will open it, just when? I have every silver I ever found, both metal detecting and CRHing and buying junk silver. Got coffee cans full

Waiting on $100 an ounce silver! :2barsgold: :treasurechest:

Ben: now you really got me interested, cuz way way back in the late 60's when my dad & I were heavy into coin/proofs collecting, he would many times order 5-10-sometimes 50 proof sets from the mint, but when they came in he would only open one or two OMP's and keep the others sealed & unopened. Got to dig them out now that I have them since his death back in 1987. Who knows, there could be some deep cameos. Tks for the heads up.
