The current (skunk) box that I'm about halfway through has unearthed at least 6 similar coins : Hubble telescope, Vietnam battles, etc.

I have found Elvis and Douglas MacArthur halves in the past.

Anyone know what's going on?

Wonder if it came from the USS Constitution museum store?

Possibly.
(On a side note, my ex-wife's grandfather had an ooold hat shop in The Combat Zone in Boston till the early '90's and he made the felt hats for the officers of the Constitution and also the felt hats for "The Brink's Job" starring Peter Faulk. Her Grandfather was really an interesting guy.)

Are they actual $.50 coins with a thingy on it, or is it something else?

Yup and even circulated they go for $3-$5 at the shows, I am going to hang onto them for now but will probably evenutally sell them at the gun show where I have a table and display my Police collection and sell replica and real coins.

Yup. I figured if I were to sell them at the gun show I would ask between $3 and $5 each. After all I am selling well circulated Ikes for $3 each, dateless buffs for 50 cents each (I get them for 5 cents each) and readable date buffs for $1 each and wheaties for 10/$1

they are not collectors or if they are they are not sophisticated collectors
