    Could some one tell me if a 1989 penny is common or is it rare

    no mention of close A.M in 2019 red book

    1988 was a transitional year. 1989 should not have a variation.

    Images of your coin really are needed.

    1989 P cents (business strike) are normal.
    The M is centered evenly between the A and E of AMERICA. (NOT closer to the A)
