Quantity and weights of denominations in original US Mint sewn bags!

I just thought I would share this here since you guys are always talking about searching bags.
(I'm not sure how many of you visit the "coins" forum. Mods, If this is redundant info please feel free to delete. Thanks.)

How many coins in a "US Mint sewn bag" and what do they weigh?
(This topic came up another forum and thought others here might be interested or ..... I might just need to get a life (: .)

Good info at this LINK on US mint issued bags.

Well, let's look at the weights of mint bags (1900 to present):

Cents- (5000 per bag)
..... Copper cents- 5000x3.1g= 15,500g= 33.07 lbs
..... Zinc cents- 5000x2.5g= 12,500g= 27.56 lbs

Nickels- (5000 per bag)
......................... 5000x5 g= 25,000g= 55.11 lbs.

Dimes- (5000 per bag)
*..... Silver- 5,000x2.5g= 12,500g= 27.56 lbs
*..... Clad- 5,000x2.27= 11,350g= 25.02 lbs


Quarters- (4000 per bag)
*..... Silver- 4,000x6.25g= 25,000g= 55.12 lbs
*..... Clad- 4,000x5.67g= 22,580g= 49.78 lbs


Half's- (2000 per bag)
..... Silver- 2,000x12.5g= 25,000g= 55.12 lbs
*..... 40% silver- 2,000x11.5g= 23,000g= 50.71 lbs
*..... Clad- 2,000x11.34= 22,680g= 50.00 lbs


Dollars- (25 to 2000 per bag)
..... 90% Silver- 2,000x26.73g= 53,460g= 117.86 lbs
..... Silver Ike- 2,000x24.62g= 49,240g= 108.56 lbs
..... Clad Ike- 2,000x22.68g= 45,360g= 100.00 lbs

..... SBA- (25 & 100 per bag)

I think your numbers are correct on silver, but clad is slightly lighter. For eaxmple a 90% silver half dollar is 12.5g vs clad at 11.5g . I forget the difference in dimes and quarters but its there.

I pulled them from a google search that had both with equal weights. I assumed the #'s were correct so vending machines would still work.

Tommy is correct on the 90% halves (12.50 gm). 40% halves = 11.50 gm. Clad halves = 11.34 gm.

90% quarters = 6.25 gm. Clad quarters = 5.67 gm.

90% dimes = 2.50 gm. Clad dimes = 2.27 gm.

Originally, I broke the silver and clad out separately but I should have looked a little further when my initial online Google search listed them as the same weight.

Thanks. Remember that a bag of cents (or any same type of coins) from the 1950s, will weigh more than the same number of like coins from the 1930s and before. That is due to being worn down from circulation.

So true. I remember my confusion the first time I compared the weight of a couple of hundred IH with the same weight of '50's wheats. There were about 150 IH to a pound and only 145(?) wheats. It finally sunk in that the difference was the wear from circulation.
