Disappointing bag of dimes

Picked this bag up and searched them yesterday. Out of the first $100-$150 searched, I found all four of these. So I’m thinking to myself that the bag could be a nice score.

The rest of the bag turned up nothing.

I suppose I can’t complain with 4 silvers, the first 15-20 minutes were so promising though. Oh well...

Good luck this week to all!

Still, that's better than a skunk!

I got 60 CWRs last week at one stop and found a silver Rosie (1960-D) in the 4th roll. Naturally, I expected more after that good start, but that was it. She had many more CWRs, but i was out of cash and was so surprised she had so many rolls that I didn't think of taking money out of my account to buy more, so I'll be back tomorrow with much more cash.

Where do you generally get your bags from? Bank?

My local Stop and Shop has the coinstar machine but they have someone come in and clean out the machines (which are full 95% of the time). I still don't understand why people use them and pay around 13%.

Coinstar machines use tubs and not bags and also reject silver. The best way to get silver from a Coinstar machine is by chance, walking past one and glancing at the reject tray for rejected silver coins.

Some folks get bags from their banks or credit unions that use coin counting machines. I've asked at credit unions where I have accounts and they no longer sell bags to customers - in my area. One manager told me it was because some CRHers complained about being a few coins short, so those folks apparently ruined it for the rest of the customers.

I get bags from only one branch of a local CU. The guy who runs the teller line there is totally cool with it, he even thanked me because he says they pay a per bag fee with their carrier to pick them up, so I’m saving them money. I obviously don’t dump at this branch. I also don’t worry about whether or not the bags are short. I think the most one of the bags of dimes I’ve gotten there has been short is maybe .30-.40 cents. Well worth it to me to not have to bust open 4 boxes per week.

Disappointing!? I'm ecstatic with any bag with more than 1 silver. Congrats!

That’s true, I’m not complaining about the take. It was a let down because I found all four in about 10 minutes so it made me think that the bag would produce more than it did

I can't tell you how many times I've found something nice as soon as I turn on the metal detector and then hunt heavily for hours and find nothing comparable....

Yeah, hate it when I sort a bag of cents and pull 20+ wheats, then the next has 3. Would much rather slog through the crap bags first instead of getting my hopes up.

I’ve actually kind of wanted to get into metal detecting but I don’t really know where to go around where I live. Plus, all I’m really interested in are coins. I’d imagine you find a lot of other stuff doing that

If you ever decide to give it a try, this is the right place for advice. When I was most active metal detecting, there was no internet so I belonged to a metal detecting club. It was there that I saw how some people specialized. We had Civil War specialists and even one guy who focused on one battle in particular. I was thrilled when I was taken there and found a live confederate artillery shell and many fuzes, minie balls, and buttons as well as other relics. I have learned a lot about history by reading posts here by some of these people. Most recently, the history of the Revolutionary War Expedition for the Penobscot has captured my attention thanks to a dedicated researcher and metal detectorist Castineman and I have enjoyed my new education very much.

There are dedicated coinshooters, beach hunters, shipwreck hunters, water hunters, park and playground hunters and just about any way of metal detecting you can imagine. I don't have a specialty but I personally prefer farmed fields that were once towns or settlements that were burned by the British during the summer of 1814 and never re-settled in their vulnerable positions. I also like old river landings because that was the main method of transportation until less than 100 years ago. I once met a guy at work who had the same metal detector model and he told me he used it solely to locate bottle dumps. I started CRH a year ago after a 50+ year hiatus because the fields were planted and the summer heat & humidity were just too much for me. And I had a broken big toe. I re-discovered CRH right here on tnet by reading posts by people like you and by seeing their pics. Now I'm hooked on it.

I started to find coins and jewelry on beaches nearly 60 years ago as a young child by sight only, surface hunting areas eroded by water and strong winds. I dreamed of what may lie beneath. In a sense, the search for the unknown is why, IMO, it is appropriate that we have a CRH forum on the tnet website. I started to CRH in the mid-1960's and have just returned to it now that I have a bit more cash than I did as a poor 10 year old in 1965. Holding that roll in my hand with the coins hidden from view is similar to arriving at a metal detecting site and turning on the machine to explore new possibilities just under the surface.

Haha. That’s great. The wife and I took the kids to myrtle beach in May and I kind of just laid on the beach and wondered what I would
Find if I had one! Haha, kind of sad that I was considering buying one on my family vacation. My little guy is getting a little older now, so maybe in a couple of years it would be neat to do with him

I agree that just laying around on a beach seems like a waste of time when one could be metal detecting! There are kid-size detectors that are inexpensive and work great. I gave my son a Tesoro (now out of business) Amigo (discontinued before they went under) and he found coins with me when he was 7 or 8. Now he's 31, and still has that old detector and used it to find his septic tank lids at his old house, the earliest part of which dates to about 1832. i hope he passes it down to his son, our first grandson, now almost 11 months old.

The best part is that he has fond memories of the two of us out on treasure hunts together.

That’s pretty awesome. Maybe in another year or two. My boy is 4 and a half, a little young I think, not a very long attention span

I always felt the same way, thinking, WOW a dream bag in the making, only to have it fizzel out.
