1. You can never drive by a bank without wondering if they have half dollars inside.

2. While on vacation, CRHing is part of it.

3. The fact that banks close early Monday thru Thursday just irritates the hell out of you.

4. Same deal with Sunday.

5. You examine any change given to you at a checkout before it goes into your pocket.

6. You also strain to look at the dime and quarter compartments in said checkout registers.

7. You get suspicious looks from bank tellers when you look over the counter to "edge search" their coins.

8. You have enough lost halves in your vehicle to purchase dinner someplace.

9. Cleaning same vehicle consists of mainly removing coin wrappers.

10. While examining change in a charity container, you are deeply saddened if you see silver inside.

11. You actually think of 'making a deal' with someone to swap 2 regular quarters for the silver one inside said container.

12. You've actually wondered the feasibility of owning 'Coinstar' type machines to get silver.

13. Tellers at your bank appear friendlier to you if you're not carrying a heavy bag into the bank.

14. Getting a silver coin in change feels like winning the lottery.

15. The thought of your grandparents bringing rolled coins to their bank is reason for enough for panic.

16. If your spouse spent your silver for face - it is justifiable grounds enough for divorce.

17. Silver clinking is better than music.

18. Gold is uglier than silver.

19. Payback for rude tellers is that their bank is now your new coin dump.

20. You wish you could stop all the old people going into the bank and buy their coin first.

21. Part of your shopping consists of checking the Coinstar reject tray.

22. Seeing the teller come out of the vault with half rolls in old wrappers escalates your heartbeat seriously.

23. You think tellers lie when they say they have no halves.

24. All you hope to hear a teller say is "All we have are these really old half dollars, you want 'em?"

25. Your dream job would be a bank teller.

26. You have seriously wished you had a time machine.

27. Or some device that would light up when you drove by a bank with silver halves in it.

28. You have opened a bank account just for CRHing.

29. You have fantasized about going to Brinks and asking for their oldest boxes of halves.

30. The friends you consider the best - will bring you their silver found in their change.

31. You love it when people think all halves made after 1964 are clad.

32. The prettiest lady is named "Walker."

33. When you hear the word "Barber," a haircut is not the first thing that comes to mind.

34. You now hate the word "Bicentennial."

35. When the teller brings your halves, you have to literally force yourself not to smile when you see silver on the end of the rolls.

36. Clad is another four-letter word which resembles another.

37. You just know that one old lady teller is hoarding all the silver.

38. Some other old, sweet teller has asked "Myyyy, how LONG have you been saving ALL of these half dollars for?"...and you don't have the guts to say... "about 25 minutes."

39. You also have an impressive zippered bank bag collection.

40. You may not remember the date, but you know the spot price of silver.

41. You've thought of looking for silver in church offering plates.

42. You've thought of CRHing in retirement towns.

43. Nobody on the planet is nicer than a teller who has saved silver coins for you.

44. A skunk is a horrible thing, it could also mean a small, smelly animal.

45. You know what NIFC stands for.

46. You've needed to use a dolly for this hobby.

47. You've lied to tellers so they won't want to look for silver themselves.

48. Your hands have looked like you disassembled an engine.

49. The worst thing you hear is; "We just sold some really old rolls 10 minutes ago..."

50. You keep a large sum of cash strictly for CRHing.

51. Bags or boxes of halves are the heaviest things you lift now.

52. You have actually paid for items only in half dollars.

53. While paying for said items, cashier looks at you like you have 3 heads.

54. Same cashier either asks manager if they can accept them and/or says they have never seen them before.

55. Someone thinks they are rare or are silver dollars and has offered you a buck apiece for them.

56. You can't believe your luck and wish you had more than just half a roll on you.

57. You hate it when clad coins have that 'silver' look to them.

58. You have bounced said coins just to 'make sure.'

59. You secretly hope that silver will hit $500 per ounce.

60. You have actually figured what your silver would be worth at $500 per ounce.

I asked the one bank as an after thought if they had any of the "big dollars". They said they had 16 and I said I'd take them, when they brought them out they were "dirty" and the teller apologized for them being dirty. 10 or so were either Peace dollars or Morgans. That was so long ago I now forget how many there were.

Wow I bet that took you a long time to get these all down on paper. I am mostly retired nor from CRHing. I moved to a town where I have accounts at half the banks in the whole county, that makes two accounts.

I still think about it and would like to comment on a few of my silver hunting memories.

(I first typed mamories by accident and that reminded me of CRHing too. Young tellers that want to show off getting you some coin. Yes I am a dirty old man, pushing 70)

14) I work at my local museum and the first sale of the day I noticed a nickel in the tray and knew it was silver. It was busy and I couldn't pull that coin out of the drawer for 30 minutes, but kept thinking about it. Finally got to it, a 1941 and I threw it back in the drawer.

15) my grandmother didn't do that. After she died my mom and her sister went around her house and looked in absolutely everything. They filled a grocery shopping bag with paper money and silver dollars. It was hidden everywhere. Problem is they never said what they did with it.

21) yep, did it at two today. as usual nada

24) heard that once only she said dirty and didn't want to sell because they were not shiny. I wouldn't be either if I was silver and all tarnished. Maybe $10 face in JFK and Benjis.

28) and I had the opening agent pull out the banks brochure and show me the part that described how much coin I could deposit daily.

50) yep, in a very safe place.

52) Three times! My mortgage. Umpqua up in Oregon has a very accurate coin counter. (I go up there every few weeks, gas is $1 cheaper)

Another: You decide to make or get treats for the tellers who save coins/currency for you and you are sure to check to see if any of them have food allergies.
(I usually get a fruit basket for them once a year.)

When you reflect on the silver dime that made you happy and then realize you spent $10-$20 in gas to pick up and dump off the reject coins...

11. You actually think of 'making a deal' with someone to swap 2 regular quarters for the silver one inside said container.

I was certain the next line was going to be.

11a) You actually made a deal to swap out a coin from said container.

Done it.... multiple times...

Of course in one instance, it wasn't truly a "charity" container it was only advertising on a bank teller's counter and someone had thrown loose change in it for some reason (including a silver coin). Bank teller said I could just have it as they couldn't count it in their tray or they would be off.

52. You have actually paid for items only in half dollars.

52a. You have actually paid for items with a combination of half dollars, $2 bills, and $1 coins.

I used to do this just to mess with the workers at the local fast food joints.

52b. You have used half dollars and Eisenhower dollars as tips at bars and restaurants.

Some other ones I didn't see...

61. You know more about the bank's self serve coin machine than the bank employees themselves.

61a. You teach bank employees how to address issues with the bank's self serve coin machine that broke while you were dumping.

62. You have taken a couple hundred mile road trip just to stop at all the banks along the way.

63. You have taken a day of vacation to make the road trip in the previous entry so you could make the trip during a weekday when banks are open longer and you can stop at more banks.

64. You set an alarm on a Saturday morning to make a bank road trip so you can stop at your first bank just as it is opening.

65. You have gone to a casino to "play" the slots, but after inserting your $20/$50/$100 bill, you "win" by instantly hitting cash out so you can look through the coins instead of actually betting any money. Then proceed to exchange back to bills and repeat until it is time to go home.

66. You have carried a bucket(s) of nickels/quarters/halves to a casino to cash them in because the banks were closed.

67. You have carried rolls/bucket(s) of coins out of a casino to look through at home.

68. You have wondered about the feasibility of creating a machine similar to a ryedale that is able to "date" search or "date/mintmark" search coins and not just perform a "metal" search to speed up the search process.

I am sure I could think of a few others, but I really should get back to work...

I've heard this story before, and saw the original post made when it was fresh, and never tire of hearing it. Also the Barber half dollar - silver half bonanza started at the drive-thru. Was all this the same bank?

I'm preparing myself to be happy for you when you post a future story about the bank finding a chest of $5 gold pieces, apologizing to you because they are so shiny and giving you a pair of those little sunglasses you get when you have your eyes dilated - so the shine from the gem UNC coins doesn't hurt your eyes, before they come to their senses and offer to carry it out to your car...
