Has anyone put together a complete set of Franklin halves just from CRH? Its a small series with no great rarities among dates and mintmarks, so wondering how realistic it might be to put together a complete set.

I had the complete set assembled from circulation as a kid in 1964 with the lowest grade being about EF. One day, I came home from school to find that my father got into my coin collection and harshly cleaned every one with baking soda paste, scratching them all, and I was heartbroken. He would not allow "dirty" coins in his house, so I gave up coin collecting until i moved out. I continued to do some CRH back then, but promptly sold my finds to coin dealers and didn't keep much for myself, knowing they would be destroyed. I still have those albums and cringe when I see them. I should sell them for bullion (quarters and dimes too) since I can't bear to look at them.

I had a small grouping of coins, about $7 in silver about 1965 or something like that. My mom decided we should take them to the bank. I thought I'd get the same ones back. I didn't. Ruined me for coin collecting.

I have found some Franklins from rolls, but not a large amount and a lot of duplicate dates, so no complete set.

I remember how clad was a novelty in 1965 and people were keeping them and spending the old silver. Even as a 10 year old, I told everyone they had it backwards and that they should be keeping the silver. Sometimes I wonder how I didn't get a concussion shaking my head no so often...

I believe a complete set of Franklins is an achievable goal assumeing you really move some volume and are slightly fortunate. I’d guess at between $8-10M worth of halves it because plausible / possible / likely.

I should also note that i’m Nowhere close. I have maybe 3 different date/mm’s from ‘48 & ‘49 and a nice 1956. No ‘55 yet and still missing probably 7-9 common dates.

In the past 13 months, I've done about 175K in halves and have accumulated 24 Franklin halves, some of which are duplicates. I'll post specific dates and mints later today. But if it takes 8-10M, that would take me at least 47 years at this rate, and I don't have 47 years, so I may not reach this goal unless I get luckier with collection dumps.

The Franklin set is definitely achievable.

I am down to 2 left to complete the Franklin set (1955, 1958), but those 2 have been found by numerous others.

The 1938-1959 Jefferson nickel set is very doable as I have found a couple complete sets of those.

The other one that should be doable is the 1946-1964 silver Roosevelt dime series. Down to 2 there as well (1949-S, 1955).

The other sets I am still hoping to finish from circulation some day even if some are a stretch:
* Indian Head cents - found 18 of 58
* Wheat cents - found 130 of 142
* V nickels - found 10 of 34
* Buffalo nickels - found 29 of 65
* Mercury dimes - found 34 of 81
* Silver Washington quarters - found 28 of 85
* Walking Liberty Halves - found 40 of 68

Most of the ones I haven't found have been found by others, so they are out there. It just takes persistence.

Checked my CRH Franklins to measure progress. I've found 26 in total in 13 months. Here they are: (duplicates in parentheses)
1949, 1950(2), 1951(2), 1951-S, 1952(2), 1952-D(2), 1953-D(2), 1954-S, 1957-D, 1959, 1960, 1960-D(2), 1961(2), 1962(2), 1962-D, 1963(2), 1963-D

There are 35 possible coins (both dates and mints) in the complete set, so these 18 are slightly better than halfway there. I don't plan to search more than 3 boxes/week, so I think finding the other 17 might be achievable with some luck.

That is an impressive achievement! If you don't mind my asking, how many years did this take?

I guess it's possible to put together a complete set of Franklin Halves from coin roll hunting but it'll take a lot of rolls to do it. The 1955 is the tough one. Good luck...…..

That is an impressive achievement! If you don't mind my asking, how many years did this take?

I've searched loose change and CRH'd since I was child in the 1980s when I would ask my mom to get $10 worth of cents at the bank from time to time, but all of the list above was during my heavy CRH days, which were primarily from 2007 to 2013 with a little before (mostly casino hunting nickels) and very little after.

My biggest issues with heavy CRH is I just don't have the time any more due to focusing on my other hobby (sports cards). That and my pickup and dump banks both changed policies making it considerably more difficult than it used to be. I would have to come up with a whole new strategy to continue if I wanted to do any volume.

Most of my searches were cents, nickels, and dimes. I occasionally tried quarters, and although I did do a number of road trips searching for halves (and buying anything else I could), I rarely ordered them.

Ultimately, I was searching between 2 million to 3 million coins a year for about 5-6 years. Although I enjoyed the searching, I don't miss the dumping.

I think I was down to 4 or 5 before the last 2 or 3 heavy CRH years and always thought I would finish it...and didn't. As stated in my other reply, right now, mainly an issue of time.

Please don't bump these old threads, but when I was doing heavy CRH, I also had created and posted a tracking list that combined everyone's finds (for the year) on this forum to see what was possible to find in the wild amongst all the CRHers. It should give you a rough idea on what is possible.

Here are the links to my old threads for 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Megalodon, about 10 years ago i searched what i refered to as a super dream box of halves. If you type in Super Dream Box from Brinks into your search engine, you'll see it. It had at least 1 example of every Franklin half except 3 years(1948-p,1953-p, and the 1955). I found the 1955 at another time and have it in a flip somewhere and the other 2 are already in my albums so I did find the complete set.They are just not all in my albums yet.

Below is what I have found in 11 years of CRH.

Good Luck
