I was cleaning out my garage and found a box of stuff that had items I have had since I was a kid. I found a box of coins that I had forgotten about. Inside was an 1896 5 centavo coin from Isla de Puerto Rico (I have no idea where I got it). I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them. I did some searching and found some ebay sales where they have gone from 60 bucks to over 400.

I found a picture of the coin online and attached a link. My coin is in pretty good shape, but not as good as the one in the photo. I also found some of those blue coin folder for pennies and nickels, with lots of coins in them. I dont even remember saving these. I must have been in grade school when I had them. Too bad I was not into silver halves back then, I could have saved a ton of them.

1896 is the second year they were minted. 1895 saw only 600,000 minted, and I assume 1896 is somewhat similar in minage stats, which would explain it going for decent money on ebay.

Thanks Dave. It is a neat little coin-about the size of a dime but thinner. The details on mine are very clear as if it was not circulated, but the luster is very dull, but what would you expect on a coin that old I guess.
