WISH THIS WAS THE REAL DEAL BUT IT IS 40% SILVER

I don't understand? Is it a fake or did they do both 40% and 90% back then? I know someone that has 6 of these and 2 of them are 1859s,also has 2 1840s,a 1842 & 1843....

That's what I thought 49er...ElvisFan how do you know it's only 40%? I am very curious because the coins I mentioned above may soon be mine.

I see no evidence of 40% silver dollars from that time in the Red Book. It dose say in 1840's -1860 the spot price of silver was more than the weight of a silver dollar for the first time. It must be a fake and should say Copy on it somewhere. ( I am not saying this to call you out, just for fact sake and knowing what it is.)

Keep @ it and HH!!

Never saw a 40% coin like that. I'm sure the guy must be mistaken. I'd take it
to another dealer and ask him what it is and what it's worth.

And keep in mind, it may be a counterfeit rather than a fake.

id bury it under the ground for 5 days then check it. If its all worn out then its 40% silver. If its comming out of the ground looking all silver then id say it is 90% silver. :)
