I was looking through some of my wheatbacks and noticed an impression on the back of this 1942D Lincoln.
I looked at it closer with a loop and noticed the way the metal had flowed out from the impression. My Question is,is there a way to tell if it happened at the mint or later.Any thoughts appreciated.thanks

Looks like ssomeone took a punch or a drill to it. post mint damage.

I was thinking if it was punched it would just push all the metal into the impression.if it was drilled it would not leave the over flow of metal.this is the best pic I could come up with. Thanks for looking

That is exactly the way a punch would do it, displace the metal to the sides. If it was some sort of mint error the metal could not be above the surface of the coin, it would be flattened by the die.
