This is my one and only Morgan find in 35 yrs. of 'tectin. When I moved the soil aside, I spotted that reeded edge. Man what a sight! After all the many thousands of coins I have dug up, it was amazing to me how big it looked in the ground.

MEinWV,

Its a rare occasion to find a Morgan Silver Dollar. I have heard, and read about more
gold coins being found, than these coins. That's a nice 1888-0 Morgan.
Would probably grade at about F/VF Value around $25.00 maybe $30.00
This Morgan had a 12,150.000 mintage.
Any time you find a Morgan, you've had a good day detecting.

1878 Morgan Silver Dollar 8 Tail Feathers Mintage and Distributions.

The 1878 8 Tail Feathers dollar, struck for only a limited time ( March 12, 1878 and some weeks thereafter ),
is of unknown mintage, but about 750,000 is probably a good guess. Many were released into circulation in closely after 1878.
At the outset the Treasury thought the new dollars would be popular. By the late 1940s, they were considered to be scarce on
the coin market, but in 1953 many bags were released from Treasury storage, filling demand.
Through the 1950s and early 1960s many more bags were released, including many in Las Vegas casinos.

The mintage is estimated as 7,200,000, based on production from April 4 to June 28, 1878, assuming that no earlier dies were used onApril 4 and later, and that after June 28 all dies were of the next style. This is not a strong premise, but may be approximate. The
distribution of all 1878 dollars was extensive at the time, but many remained on hand through the time of the 1962 through 1964

250 is a popular estimate of proof mintage, although there is no official figure. Van Allen and Mallis suggest 200 proofs were struck.

On April 17, 1878 the Carson City Morning Appeal ran this commentary: Dies at last..Yesterday the new dies for the U.S. Mint
arrived from Philadelphia. There were 10 obverse , ten reverse and six dollars. The dies were hardened yesterday and the big
Ajax press will start up today. There are 632,325 blanks ready for the press. And when they get to work will turn out the dollars
at the rate of 30,000 per day. We have had our little say about the dollars coined in Philadelphia, and noe the coiner here is
driven to following the footsteps, or rather the press whacks, of the concern on Delware. Great degust was expressed at the general appearance of the dies.

After the great Treasury release was halted in March 1964, the General Service Administration hloding of 1878-CC dollars totaled 60,993.

Mintage and Distribution of 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar All with reverse of 1878 PAF

Early coinage of the 1878-S dollars was not easy, for the ten pairs of dies sent from Philadlphia to the San Francisco
Mint on April 8, three obverse and eight reverse were considered by the coiner to be unfit for use.5,000,000 to 6,000,000
of these, and most of the origial mintages of 1879-S, 1880-S, 1881-S, and 1882-S were stored at the San Francisco Mint.
Large quantities of these were released in subsequent years, mostly after 1913, and extensively in the 1950s many going to
Las Vegas, some held by banks, and casinos as cash reserves with a secret appreciation pontential.

Die Varieties: Dozens of die pairs, all of the reverse of 1878 (PAF) style were on hand at the San Francisco Mint by early summer, but it was not know how many were actually used that year, although the figures were at lest 43 obverses and 38 reverses. Some reverses were kept and employed in 1879. The VAM text describes many varieties of minor doubling. Both Walter Breen and the Top 100
Morgan Silver Dollar Varieties take note of the so called Long Nock or Long Arrow Shaft variety, for which the left tip of the arrow is slighty longer than normal, Remarkly, virtually all know pieces show wear, this despite the use of at least five die pairs in the coinage.

VERMONTPACKRAT,

That's a really nice 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar. I would dare to say you had a very satisfied customer.
As you know, Your, or your customer 1893-S Morgan, is one of the most desired coins in the Morgan
series. Thanks for posting that beautiful coin on this thread. I would hazard a guess at the value of this
Morgan being between $9,500 to $14,000 If I am to far off, let me know. And, I will correct it.

" The 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar is the object of great desire in the Morgan dollar series. No single issue
has greater popularity across the board. The majority of known pieces, into the thousands, are in single
grade catgory. of very fine. Not good or VG, not EF or AU, but VF Most such pieces circulated in the
American West, and for an appropriate but apparently restricted time, to bring them to this grade.

mint state coins exist, However, among the great Treasury release coins of 1962 through 1964, no bags
or even small group was found. although many stray pieces were identified, nearly all in the aforementioned
VF grade. Many fake 1893-S Morgan dollars exist, Absolutely and positively do not buy any 1893-S dollar
that has not been certified by a leading service, and avoid like the plague offerings of uncertifed coins
"from an old estate" or from " my granfather's collection" offered on the Internet.

While few will be able to afford a Mint State 1893-S, enough attractive VF coins exist that out there somewhere
is one just right for you.

Circulation Strikes usually seem well struck, and even worn pieces are apt to have good detail. The luster is
usually deep and rich on Mint State specimen's, when they can be found. Prooflikes are in the minority's.

Prooflike coins: About half of the known Mint State coins have a degree of prooflike character.

Mintage and Distribution: Delivery figures by month, January, 100,000 February- December,0
Tens of thousands of 1893-S dollars went into circulation, However, those of 1893-S are almost all VF.
A strong clue is provided by experience of dollar specialist E.S. Thresher, who in The Numismatist, July 1925,
said that despite years org looking, he had not found an 1893-S. I can envision a scenario in which, sometime
after 1925, tens of thousands were turned loose in circulation in the Rocky Mountain states, routinely used,
and not numisnatically noticed.
This wood neatly explain the VF concentration. Apart from 20 Mint State coins said to have been found in a bag
in Great Falls, Montana, and reported by Wayne Miller, I do not know of any group of high grade coins found
in the 1950s or later, However, Walter Breena reported that Harry Warner, once active in the bulk sale of silver dollars,
had handled a full bag, If so, then we may all be surprised and delited someday if these appear.

Die Varieties: There is just one pair known, distinguished by having a very raised diagonal die line on the crossbar of the
T in Liberty diagnostic"

VPR if you have some other Morgans, you would like to post pictures of, I would really like to see them on this thread.

Although dollars of this date have been plentiful from day one, indicateing release near the time of coinage. Many bags remained in storage. In near Mint State supplies were plentiful in the 1950s and 1960s, often trading in quanity. However, few remained by the time of the Treasury releases of 1962 through 1964.

Proof Mintage: Mint record 1.100. Breen comment: "250 coined in first quarter, 500 in second, total 750 of these 100 were melted in January 1880, leaving 650 net mintage." I find the650 figure to be unlikely in view taht in proportion to suvival of other dates, there are to many certified coins, 1,100 seems to more correct.

Most of these coins are of low contrast. Striking quality is average. Although the mintage is high, the challenge for quailty is high as well.

Mintage and Distribution of the 1879-CC Morgan Silver Dollar

There were probably hundreds of thousands of 1879-CC Morgan Dollars, melted under the 1918 Pittman Act,
But facts will never be known. In the early 20th century, quantities of these dollars were sent to the San
Francisco Mint for storage. and others went to the Treasury Building in Washington DC. At least several thousand
were paid out by the latter depot in eary , one bag of 1000 coins goinf via an intermediary to dealer Harry J. Forman.
A bag from San Francisco wen to someone one in either Montana or Seattle, After the great Traesury release was halted
in March 1964, the General Services Administation holding of 1879-CC dollars totaled 4,123 of the orginal mintage,
per later inventory. The Redfield hoard, dispersed in the late 1970s, is said to have been 400 to 500 of the large CC Over
small CC variety. These not coming form the GSA.

Die Varieties, Several varieties exist, but the large CC and the large CC over the small CC are the only ones that have attracted much notice.

The 1893 and 1893-0 Morgan Silver Dollar have a good fair market value. But, I also think
they are a good investment, low mintage (1893 mintage 378,000, 1893-0 300,000) sleeper
coin. They may not have a large value increse in the next few months, But the furure looks
good for them. A nice 1893 EF may be had for around $325.00. 1893-0 EF around $525.00
If graded they will have a greater value.

The 1879 Morgan Silver Dollars, are one of my favorite years for these coins.
With all the differant Die Varieties. That's a nice pic of your 1879-CC Morgan.
The best one of those I've ever had was about a VF-20.
