Survivor population drives pricing for the Lincoln wheat cent. That is except for the 09-S VDB. The public was all over that one and recognized a rarity in the making. Many pristine examples were "set aside" for future profit taking. There is a collector love affair for the S-VDB that will persist despite the large number of examples. That wasn't the story for the 14-D and it's harder to find pristine examples of this coin ... same for the 22 no D that wasn't discovered until many years after minting (the public was slow to realize that Philadelphia didn't mint any cents that year). In 1931, the public again saw an opportunty in the 31-S and set aside lots of coins.

Speaking of the 31s I found one just yesterday, & it is in great shape at least fine to x fine. I didn't know what I had until I got home and washed it off, turned out to be one heck of a better find than the 43 merc I was excited about.
