New penny's slow start in circulation increases value

By Laura Petrecca, USA TODAY
The penny, often picked on for its piddly value, has found some self worth in 2009.
The 2009 Lincoln cent — slow to spread into consumers' pockets — is being sold for big bucks. Single coins have fetched more than $1 each. Fifty-cent rolls have frequently ranged from $2 to more than $50 at online auction websites.

The first of four new penny designs officially launched on Feb. 12 — Abraham Lincoln's birthday — but the 634.8 million coins produced by the U.S. Mint have barely made it into circulation.

Re: New penny's slow start in circulation increases value

Jeff, I went to three banks today and even talked a relative at our Walkmart which is always good for new rolls. All three banks told me the same thing. The federal reserve has done and the banks cannot get them, even by ordering them. I would imagine they will sooner or later start cirulating around. But if the first series is so hard to get about the other 3 do for release this year. I been trying everywhere to get then at a descent price.

Went to the bank today, they didn't have any rolls. :icon_scratch:

Ordered 30 boxes of cents last week from Loomis (20) and Brinks (10). Not a single Log Cabin. I'm taking time off to go to the second release in Indiana this May. I will buy as much as they'll let me.

Why they even make them I don't Know.

I guess next year there will Be a Perminant Change
to the lincoln penny & they will Produce
& Stash another Hundred Million of
them.

Nobdy wants them.

Some Stores have Cups to throw them in.
Some ask the Customer if
they want their Pennies when
your bill comes to .98 - .99
People are turning them in by the Millions
to get a little spending Cash. or just
Dropping them on the ground (Like Litter) rather then carry
them home.

and the Mint still Produces them
by the Billions.

What are they Realy Worth ? $0.0039889

Even a copper pennies Value has Dropped to a Penny $0.0143238

Re: New penny's slow start in circulation increases value

Well with the new release of the second penny due out soon, I am wondering if any of the first series will make it out in any quanity. Mint ran out of the P-D 2 rolls for $8.95 in hours. If they don't get the second, third and fourth series out any better then the 1st they may turn out to be very hard to get. Time will tell what the hold up is getting them out to the banks and public.

As for the new 2010 year design, I really would like to see the L17 (eagle) go onto the reverse. Reminds me out the older 1800s cents. Maybe put the indian back on it for a few years. That is a darn nice looking cent.

Nice eagle, I like that.
Instead of copper/zinc, they should just make pennies out of aluminum. Lots of other countries already do it with their small change, so it seems to work....

I also like the eagle cent.

I think the mint should re-release the Indian Head Cent for a year or two as well. It would be cool to get shiney IH's in change once in a while.
