Base Pre-Decimal Coins of the Kings and Queens of Portugal, (including the 40-reis which was first minted during the 1792-1826 reign of John V), were minted between 1580 and 1836. The 40-reis coin was minted in both silver and base metals through 1836 when decimal coins were introduced. Post-1836 coinage (at least through 1910) did NOT include a 40-reis denomination.
