I need some help with this gold coin i purchased at a public auction
They had it in a display case for the better items and beings it's gold
I never imagined i'd get it for the price i paid I didn't even know what
it was or if it was real or not
Next day i went to borders and looked in the World Coins Book 1700 -
1900 and there it was G (good) conditon 300.00 :o
1. Does anyone have the World Coins book 1700 - 1900 to confirm
what i saw ?
2. Can someone tell me something about the coin ? like where it was
made ? is it rare ? and how rare ?
3. Would someone grade it for me i know it's tough with just a photo
but, it has to grade better than G (good) ?
4. If someone does have the book and can grade it how much would
it be worth ?

The piece reflects a 2 escudo, minted in Mexico City. The full weight would be 6.77 grams and measure 23 mm in diameter. What bothers me about the piece is the assayers mark: FM. I believe it is suppose to read MF; otherwise it seems to view 'ok'. My 'yellow flag' went up when I saw that assayer's mark. Hopefully, that mark is either part of an error coin or I've misjudged the piece.
Don.......
Edited per Jeff's comment below: Thanks Jeff: Mark should be FM not MF.

Well, unfortunately i can't weigh it or measure it :(
This was bought in 2004 at auction for lol $30.00 Then went to Border's
an looked in the World Coin Book. I was pretty sure every thing matched ?
Took it to a coin dealer and he offered 75.00 based on current gold prices
And he said foreign coins don't bring as much. i said no deal
A while later when gold rose some i asked again an he offered $85.00 and
i ended up selling it to him. i thought cool i made a nice profit :icon_sunny:
A couple weeks later i went to him just browsing and he say to me ........
Hey, i found something on the coin i didn't see when you sold it to me
with a big smile. like WOW, it was worth more than i thought haha
Ever since i've been wondering what was that coin really worth ? ?
And thats why i posted it here for the coin experts to get the truth

You gave that away. Worth many times what you got.

PS... ANY dealer would know it was worth way more than melt. He totally screwed you, and he knew it, and it was all BS about finding something on the coin. BUT... you sold it even after seeing a potential $300 book value!

Thanks for the photo Iron Patch
Could you tell me why mine has an MF instead of FM like Mackaydan
pointed out ? And like the 8 escudos on the "wrong" link i posted :icon_scratch:
and now corrected ?

UPDATE: Thanks to Iron Patch  Your photo helped me out a lot !!

Now i have an idea of what it was worth I'm just glad i made 50 bucks profit on it
And i haven't been back to that coin dealer ever since that day
I wanted to sell problem is i didn't know of anywhere else to go

Double check above the M on the mint mark, I believe you will find a small crown over the M and not a small o. This would make it "Madrid" the capital of Spain, hence the crown.
It should have about 1/5th oz gold. they trade in the $250 to $600 range depending on grade and condition. If it was Mexico Mint. Its some Money.

Thanks for the reply and info jewelerdave
With the photo Iron Patch provided and my photo ( unfortunately thats all i have left )
it appears it did have a crown above the M
If only i would have been a member of T-Net back then i would've known what i had :(
I didn't even have a computer in 04
I did find a link to an auction in Jan 09 same coin as mine in VF - XF condition
Which shows me mine might've been in maybe F - VF cond ?
I tried to post this earlier but it didn't work :icon_scratch: maybe this time it will
