Found this today down in Mississippi. Second 1/2 Real I have found this year. The coin is SILVER. Lighting and background gave it a golden hue.
Any information on the coin would be much appreciated.

Not real (no pun intended) familiar with the markings, especially the ones after the date.

Coin's diameter is 16mm; assayer's initials: JM. 10Ds 20G refers to the % of the coin's silver purity.
The fineness of silver was measured in the medieval system of 'dineros' and 'granos'. 12 dineros was pure silver. Each dinero was divided into 24 granos. So 10Ds 20Gs was equal to .902777 fineness.

Many thanks Don. Is there a good book or website on old coins that you would recommend?

For Mexican coins, I use Frank W. Grove's book; "Coins of Mexico"; 1981, Quarterman Publications, Lawrence, Mass. ISBN: 0-88000-123-2

How about early Spanish coins in general?

I believe that any main library would have a catalogue of world coins. You may wish to clarify what you are seeking; coins from mainland Spain or its colonies/territories--or both. Coins from what (which) century(ies), etc. No doubt others here have a much greater knowledge on the subject so the more specific you can be with your request, the closer these TNets will come to answering your question.

I believe that is an 1828/7 1/2 reale of Mexico City... unfortunately the 1828/7 is more common than the 1828... (the tip of the 7 protrudes from the last 8 at the 2 oclock position).

Value is around $10 to $15 in F to VF.
