My two cents:
If you wish to buy, buy for 'show' (or telling fibs to your friends); but pay zip for the gold value.
The base metal is propably lead-free pewter. (Copper alloyed with other metals).
With high use, the gold plate usually wears off quickly.

Are they coins or some kind of medals? If medals as Mackaydon says they are probably some kind of base metal. If that is the case they have no real value except as keepsakes or curios, my opinion about $19 dollars too much.

Is there a chance that all the coins are silver and gold plated - I know this is a stupid question - :icon_scratch: :dontknow: but I have to ask.
So when my question is answered - NO WAY - how to find out what material the coins are made off - if that really matter.

Probably a very thin layer of gold/silver over a base metal, as others have said. Even given the current high prices of gold, there probably isn't a total of $1.00 worth of gold and/or silver on all of them. You might look at ebay for examples.

Re: Gold plated " copy coins" - ?

only if the manufactor is known can you figger out what the metal below the plating is -- since silver with gold plating would weigh roughly about the same as lead free pewter with gold plating --if the manufactor of these coins is known --look up their web site hopefully it will say what the "under metal" is -- coins like these are often made for wall hangwer type displays for coin collecting folks who like the "looks" of "historical" gold coins but can not afford to collect the real ones.

How about these gold tone quarters? I have found a quarter and a half dollar. Also these painted state quarters are pretty cool. I figure they arn't worth but a quarter but pretty cool none the less...

Anything painted is worth face value... I really hate when companies think it looks 'pretty' to ruin a coin.

Those gold dollars are simply souveniers or trinkets... whatever word you want to use. I see them at flea markets for a couple bucks each usually.
