Maltese Cross medallion

I acquired this in Germany in 1955 while my dad was stationed there. I've always wondered what this was, suspecting it to be a good luck charm made in someone's garage, but thinking it could possibly be something from the Crusades since it has classic medieval Christian symbols. I'd appreciate any guidance or opinions to determine what this is. I've included a couple pics. It's about the size of a US fifty cent piece

I think the 'IHS' Christogram is of western Christianity, not Miedievel.
