    Indian Heads

Someone gave me a collection of hundreds of mostly indian head pennies and a few hundred wheaties. What are the top 5-10 years/mint marks I should look for in the stack?

I'll give you my top 5. But first, don't forget to check for Flying Eagle cents. Specifically any 1856.

    0. 1856 (Flying Eagle)
    1. 1858 (8 over 7) - Flying Eagle
    2. 1888 (8 over 7)
    3. 1873 (doubled Liberty)
    4. 1877
    5. 1864 (with L)

find an 1856 FE? i doubt it
but any 1866-1872, and 1877, would be worth money even in low grades

Any date 1882 and before is worth a few dollars up to hundreds. Look at these coin values to see what you got

I think you did fine and you found basically free coins, doing something you love, in a world where people tend to never get out into the "field".

Even not searching out the rare dates, you have several hundred $$ worth of coins. Most common date Indian Heads in ok shape go for at least a buck or two. I'm sure many are worth considerably more. Good luck!
