    1976 Kennedy Halves...

Is there any way to definitively tell the difference between the clad 76 bicentennials and the 40% silver ones? I believe I found a 40% silver proof (76 Kennedy), but I'm not sure. The edge looks silver, but I'm thinking it could be from the proof making process. The ring seems silver, but I really want to know if there is a definitive mark or characteristic on the coin that would correctly identify it as 40% silver or not. Thanks

Weigh it. I don't know the weights of the coins off the top of my head. The Redbook has the weights in it. Hope this helps.

It should weigh 178 grains if it's 40% silver and clad weighs 175 grains. Did you find it in circulation?

The sides can show a copper layer and still be 40% clad.

If proof then it will have an S mint mark. I wish the OP would post an image. Here's information on 40% clad coins http://coinauctionshelp.com/HowToTel...lverCoins.html
