I believe it is the remains of a bezel or the like around it. It may once have been in a belt buckle or piece of jewelry.

It could have been in a bezel or a botched spooning job or a door knocker or even in a belt buckle, but what's on the reverse of the coin? Has it been plated?

I honestly have no idea. Maybe paint? It came in a traded lot. I traded a 2.50 common gold piece in AU58(NGC) for 24 Morgans and this was in the lot. I was very happy with the trade.

it is definitely in a silver bezel. Common coin low grade. Put it in your safe and forget about it till silver hits 50 bucks again.
