Origin: Mexico. An 8R would weigh about 27.5 grams. Estimating the coin's weight (after deducting the gold) will facilitate determining the probable denomination of your cob.
Welcome to Treasure Net !!

When I was on a cruise I saw some similar to this in gift shops but don't know if this is exact. The ones I saw had documentation stating that they were reproductions made from melted bar silver from the Atocha.

Not as exciting of an answer...but good to hear....Hum...so would explain the silver. Made an apt with a local coin shop---we will see...

Great luck for me if it is...Christmas is near..need $. Any idea what this thing may be worth (preowned etc). Any wild guesses? I was asking $199 but put it on hold till I know more. Seeing a coin collector tonight to "verify" or see if it is real (I will update here..._) See if your helpful guesses are right..if he knows...just picked out a coin dealer on my way home from work...random...

Re: Anybody help me ID this coin?? Pictures
real gold holder = real silver spanish coin (most likely in my veiw)-- who would put a "fake" spanish 1 reale silver coin in a high dollar gold holder ? makes poor bussiness sense --since the fake coin would "cheapen" the value of the gold holder / coin mix --esp since a real 1 reale coin would not be that costly compared with the cost of the gold holder -- real gold holder / real coin would hold proper value and "match up' properly -- i say if the holder is real 14 k most likely the spanish silver coin is also.

IMO, the purchase will be based more on price, pitch and appearance verus comparable sales. The more you can spice up your ad (pics and text), the better chance you'll have of reaching your price. Then again, you may wish to start at (say) 99 cents and 'let it fly'--or put a reserve price on the item.

Yes..price and pitch is everying (sometimes). 14K has value alone. Would frankly be happy with $199 (and had (have) lots interested). Just want to be wise--I am super impulsive...I made up some price--and it seemed to catch a LOT of eyes... not sure why. Worried me. I do need to check to be sure it is authentic (if I can).....
Many of you have been very helpful today--I will check back and update after my coin collector visit at 5pm EST and share. Hopefully good news...hopefully he knows what he is doing...thank you all very much for at least a running start....

those that know can buy from a photo, those that don't shouldn't buy
(I wouldn't pay more than £50 for it, but thats a Brits opinion)

Solved (mostly) Anybody help me ID this coin?? Pictures
X POST
Hello and thanks for all your help...
I stopped at the coin collector #1 (ended up hitting two)...he was a man of few words. confirmed it was real, silver and 14K gold. That was just about all he said- shipwrecked coin..authentic...and runs about $300 retail.
I went to a second place that was much more friendly. This man said many of the same things...added it was 1R (nice job gentlemen--and ladies) and part of a 8-- 90% silver (as I guess most shipwreck coins are)...said it was in nice condion--not a super big peice....and gave me a guess a bit higher.
He could not tell me a year (uggg....) or the ship it may have come from. I was really wanting that info!
Any guesses?
So you all were right! Thanks for the help!
50 "L"...78 USD?? Hoping for more...... I am sure you know your stuff--not second guessing-just hoping for more ...

Not sure what the 'L' is but your right £50 converts to $78. Don't take what I would pay as an indication of it's worth to the US Market. Ask IP, as he knows its market value from your perspective. I just gave a value I would be willing to pay, bearing in mind, I prefer the coin to the gold jewelry. I would probably scrap the gold & hope that the holder had done no damage.
Also they paid little attention to the coin & hung it on its side

Maybe in this case the "L" stands for Librae, which is where we got our £ or Pound from, being Roman for pound. Our original £sd stood for librae, solidi, denarii and "L" is still used to this day in certain circles.

Because it's always hammer time
