Forgotten Family Coin Collection

Hello all. I have been a lurker here for a very long time, and decided to finally post... after a pretty nice find. My wife and I are tracing back our family lineages and looking through old document collections. While going through one set of documents we found a small collection of coins. Looks like someone had some for thought. It had been lost in the mix for years... she didn't know it was there, nor did her family. I will post a list of coins below.

There were other things as well. These are just the highlights. Beyond these we have found pictures, Civil War Discharge papers etc. Oh what fun!

great bit of finds --the civil war discharge papers are real family treasures.

the 1863 indain head cent is civil war era "bronze"
the 1864 2 cent piece is also civil war era as well

Yep, your coins are more valuable to your family heritage than they are numismatically, a slight correction on the 1863 IH, it has a different color to it because it was a different composition than later IH pennies, it contains 88% copper and 12% nickel. Later IHs have 95% copper and 5% zinc/tin.

That's a nice little mix of coins you got there The Civil War discharge paper is a nice piece of history, although they aren't extremely rare you should think of maybe getting it framed to keep it preserved.

We were planning on framing the papers as well as those of family members that fought in WWI, WWII etc. It was just really fun to find these things among everything else. I realize no key dates etc, just wanted to share. Thanks for the support everyone.

If I were you, I'd consider getting a Dansco album for the coins, I /think/ you can get custom pages (not 100% on that) but you can make a custom binder to house all of them and prevent any further damage/mishandling of them. I would not get a Whitman folder because A) You can't see both sides of the coin and B) It runs the risk of damaging the coins. But Dansco albums are high quality (and have a price tag to match) and should be able to preserve your family heritage in an easy to look at way.

I would recommend scanning and making (several!) CD's of digital copies of your family documents. I just did the same thing a few months back (some were cemetery deeds going back to the 1830's (which my brother thinks "we" should sell Sorry bro, not gonna happen while I'm alive!) and are so fragile that handling them further would be bad, but with a digital scan, all kinds of detail pops out.) Always good to have backups....
