Red Book Question

I bought my first Red Book this weekend. I've already reached for it a dozen times. I do have one question though. I've noticed on some entries between the description and the mintage is a number in parentheses. What does that number mean?

Proof totals are shown in parentheses, and are not included with coins made for circulation.

So if a Mint only made Coin A in Proof, the mint total would be under that column and in parenthesis. If the Mint made both Proof and Circulating varieties of the same coin, the Proof number would be in parenthesis between the date and the Mintage column. The circulating number produced would be under the Mintage column.

You may also see mintage in italic. These are estimates of total mintage. They are revised if/when new information becomes available.

Thanks for the help. I didn't find that line on page five, it was on page 11 (I've got a spiral bound) in the welcome to numismatics section. Silly me thinking I'd find it in the how to use this guide. Anywho when I looked at more entries it was much clearer.
