It is really hard to see so it is kind of hard to tell. I will say this though if the metal is "pooled up" looking it is what is called a cud error. If the metal looks like it is "peeling" it is called a lamination error. From what I can see it looks to me as if somewhere throughout this pennies journey to your hands it has come in contact with some other form of hard metal. A lot of times when searching pennies we want so bad to find an error that everything we see we assume is an error. One thing I will say it is very hard to sale an error coin to someone that does not know a lot about them. My suggestion would be to set the coin aside and thoroughly examine it. Look across the internet at error coins and try your best to identify it, put it in a coin flip, mark it and save it. I hope this helps you. I am no expert by any means but pennies is my passion and have discovered a small amount of error coins. You can check out some of threads and post. But hey thanks for posting you never know!

I have over 45 of these Die Clash 1947 S Cents that I put in a plastic tube. I found more than that, but I threw the ugly ones back into the wheat cent bag. You might find this error on any coin, but the '47S is most common.
I also found 2 1949S, a 1953d and a few more that I forgot the dates.

You bring up a good point JD. Look on both sides of the coin!
Even if you have 'The Cherrypickers' Guide' that tells, and shows what dates have errors, be it a doubled die obverse (DDO) or one mint mark over another (OMM), look on the other side of the coin. It may have a treasure there. I wonder how many 1999 P Cent with a Muled Dime reverse ($200-$??.???) or coins like it that I might have spent because I was too lazy to flip it over.

But you caught it!

I think that your cent is worth only a little more than any post 1939 "S" cent. Condition is very important.
