Flying eagle small cent

Today I unearthed a flying eagle small cent. Very nasty looking. I have it soaking in olive oil. Is there a quicker safe way to get it cleaned(at least enough to get a date)? Im impatient and excited...

Not photo ready yet. Got a clear 57 though. Its caked with some black funk. Tooth brush really ineffective. Im afraid to use elecrolysis. I smelted an 1864 indian cent a couple weeks ago. Plugged it in and in the time it took to go pee it it was agonner.

Olive oil is not a safe way to clean a coin, as it's acidic and unless neutralized in some way, in time it will damage your coin. Mineral oil soak may be a safer soak.

Never cleaned a coin before. It's like "against" my numismatist rules, I guess.

Agreed. Do old coppers get that rough looking around the U.S. or is that a new england thing?
