Soak it in olive oil for 24-hours, then use a soft toothbrush to try and get some of the loose stuff off

Couldn't agree more. The olive oil will loosen the crud up. There is always the boiling peroxide in microwave then rubbing it with baking soda. In this case though I recommend using olive oil for a while. It could take more than the first try.

Boil it in peroxide if you want to darken it.
Use olive oil if you want an acidic medium to slowly damage your coin over time.

Mineral oil soak only would be your best bet.
